Crossing the Terminus

A Mother's Departure

Morning in her living room hospital bed, drifting in and out of consciousness.

The long night hearing Mom’s death rattle breathing was heartbreakingly painful, unnerving in the anticipation of its absence.

Her eyes flutter open, grateful lucidity blossoming, mirroring the flourish of her cherished flowers and plants.

Unknowingly, the final "I love you" exchanged.

Caressing. Holding hands. Kissing. Smiling.

A lifetime of love fading away.

She took her last breath, alone in her bed, drifting off to her beloved children’s laughter a few feet away.

Heartbreak. Tears. Gratitude.

Her final repose is peaceful, calm.

Free at last from the pain.
