Yesterday, I had a deep chat with my buddy John. I asked him a simple but big question: “What matters most to you in life?”

John, in his usual easygoing way, said, “When I’m hungry, I eat. When I’m sleepy, I sleep. When tired, I rest.” I thought about it and sighed, saying, “That’s freedom, isn’t it?”

John nodded, saying, “Exactly. What matters is taking care of your own needs.” I agreed, “Yeah, you’re right.”

As we talked, we realized many people spend their lives pleasing others but forget about themselves. We’ve seen the kids grow up, friends drift away, and life throws curveballs. We understood that sometimes, our partners might not be with us till the end.

Reaching a certain age, I had an epiphany — instead of always pleasing others, it’s okay to please yourself.

So, as we faced the second half of life, John and I laid out a plan for a good story of self-discovery, resilience, and happiness.

We decided on a simple rule — be happy without spending too much.

“Stop overthinking,” I said. “Too much thinking causes problems,” John added. “Don’t compare yourself to others,” I emphasized. “Be happy with what you have.”

When it came to skills, we talked about being self-sufficient. “Save money,” John said. “Stay healthy,” I added. “And keep moving forward,” we agreed.

Then, for the soul, we talked about being your guide. “Enjoy alone time,” I suggested. “Learn new things,” John advised. “Stay busy, but also take it easy sometimes,” I added.

In our chat, I shared a saying:

Mid-life crisis isn’t about loneliness or getting old. It’s realizing you haven’t lived the way you want.”

So, as we looked ahead, we decided to live well, appreciating every step of the journey. Our conversation became a simple guide for anyone wanting a happy and fulfilling life.
