Command That Broke the World
When Silence Was Not Safety It Was Complicity
Stay quiet.
I didn’t hear those exact words spoken aloud at first. But I felt them, hanging thick and heavy in the air, pressing against my chest, as clear as any shout. The moment Blaze gave his order, the whole world seemed to hush. The cheering died down to a murmur. The glass stopped falling. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. And in that sudden stillness, the message settled over everything: See nothing. Hear nothing. Say nothing. Stay quiet.
I pressed myself deeper into the narrow gap between the parked van and the brick wall, my hands clamped tight over my mouth to hold in the breath that wanted to escape. My heart hammered so hard I was sure they could hear it thud, thud, thud loud as a drumbeat in the quiet. I wanted to step forward. I wanted to shout. I wanted to point and scream they surrendered! You’re supposed to protect them! But something held me back a cold, sharp fear that if I made a sound, I would be next. That the same power sealing those men inside could turn on me just as quickly.
Stay quiet.
I saw it in the way Frost lowered her gaze, her face smooth and unreadable, refusing to meet anyone’s eyes. In the way Singa shifted his weight, the metal of his skin gleaming dull and heavy, as if he had already decided not to speak. In the way Nightveil pulled his hood lower, melting into the shadows rather than standing in the light and saying this is wrong. In the way Kounter stood tall and unyielding at the alley mouth, his arms raised, keeping everyone out and keeping the truth in. None of them said it. But all of them obeyed it.
Around me, people were already complying without being told. A man next to me leaned over to his friend and whispered, “Don’t make trouble. It’s better this way. They know what they’re doing.” His friend nodded, glancing nervously toward the alley. “Right. We don’t know the full story. Best stay out of it.” A mother pulled her child closer, covering the little girl’s eyes with her hand. “Don’t look, say nothing. It’s none of our business.”
None of our business. That was the quiet lie we all told ourselves to make it easier. That if we didn’t speak, we weren’t part of it. That silence was just staying safe.
But silence wasn’t keeping anyone safe inside that alley. It was keeping them trapped.
I watched the barrier hold, smooth and invisible, and I thought of all the times I had been told to be quiet to not ask too many questions, to not rock the boat, to trust the people in charge. I had thought quiet was polite. I had thought it was respectful. I had thought it was how you got along in the world. Now I saw what it really was: a door left unlocked for cruelty to walk through.
Stay quiet.
The order hung in the air long after the alley fell silent. Long after the last cry faded. Long after Kounter lowered his arms and the crowd cheered again, louder than before, as if shouting could drown out the empty space where the truth had been.
I walked home that day with my own silence heavy in my throat. I didn’t tell my mother. I didn’t tell my father. I didn’t tell anyone. I was too young, too small, too afraid that if I spoke the words out loud, they would turn on me too. But as I walked, I made a promise to myself quiet, but firm, the kind no one else could hear: I will not stay quiet forever.
Silence protects the guilty. It never protects anyone else. And one day, I would find the courage to break it.
