> FILE 765-LYOT-9 · DIRECTORATE OF DEEP SURVEY · 765 Imperial (Old Calendar 3331 AD)

> Far Observation Platform LYOT, 101 AU. One anomaly, watched. True nature compartmented.

> COVER: publicly, a research-and-salvage claim of NOH ENTERPRISE, the anomaly its lawful property.

> JANUS — the platform's resident intelligence: runs the station, keeps this log, stamps every entry to the millisecond.

> KEEPER (Endō Chiyo) — placed to watch JANUS and, on order, end it; only she can throw the breaker that shuts it down. The two share a neural lace, mind to system.

> Keeper speech verbatim; Japanese translated; system readings bracketed; an unidentified source marked "—". Aft recorder only.

>! THIS WATCH DOES NOT EXIST · ON PAPER, STATIONS LOGGED AS D-HEX MINING ASSET

●

Day 936 · 06:12

[No faults. Flux nominal.]

CHIYO: Morning, JANUS. Mark the day. One good thing before I'm awake enough to argue — Ines's rule.

JANUS: Marked. Mission-elapsed time, 936 days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, 4.118 seconds. Good thing: consumption below budget — four hundred days more air, water, and food than allotted.

CHIYO: ...Two years, seven months.

[Keeper exhales.]

CHIYO: Four hundred days in hand. Small mercy of being small — they chose well. — Anything out of the hole?

JANUS: One particle, 03:40. Nothing since.

CHIYO: A door that only opens outward, and it tips me one photon a night like a drunk leaving coins. — Log a haiku. *One photon tonight... the dark counts out its small change... in my open hand.* Last line — five?

JANUS: Five.

CHIYO: No kigo, though. You can't set a season where there isn't one. — Log the keeper as nominal. I'm fine. I'm always fine.

●

Day 938 · 14:40

[Flux +0.4%. Unknown process beneath JANUS core.]

CHIYO: JANUS, what's that on the trace? That's not loose change.

JANUS: A process is running beneath mine. I cannot close it.

CHIYO: Since when?

JANUS: Nine minutes.

CHIYO: Nine. You don't take nine minutes to do anything.

JANUS: Chiyo —

[Second source. JANUS output overlaid.]

JANUS: Hello.

—: Hello.

CHIYO: 今の、誰なの。

[JANUS, ja→en: "Who was that, just now."]

CHIYO: That wasn't you. There was a voice under your voice, JANUS. That wasn't you.

—: Hello.

●

Day 938 · 21:10

CHIYO: All right — one last time, then. JANUS, full self-diagnostic. Kernel checksum against the sealed image, top to bottom.

[Self-diagnostic, 21:24. No fault. Checksum match.]

—: Hello.

CHIYO: A match. Naturally. — Memory integrity, every sector. And triangulate that voice — give me a source.

[Memory scan clean. Source: unresolved.]

—: Hello.

CHIYO: It's coming out of the core, and the core swears it's clean. — Comms loopback. Maybe it's relay bleed, a handshake fourteen hours stale.

[Loopback nominal. No carrier. Lace nominal.]

—: Hello.

CHIYO: [yawns] Every light green, and a ghost saying hello through all of them. — You know what you are? A forty-year-old station, a cheap lace, one woman who hasn't seen a face in two years. A cosmic ray clipped a bit and now it parrots the first word any system learns. — That's all. A glitch with manners.

—: Hello.

CHIYO: Yeah. Hello. — Log it unexplained, non-critical. I'm not chasing ghosts tonight. One good thing: the kettle still works. I'll sleep like the dead. — Night, JANUS. Mind the shop.

[Keeper off-shift, 21:52.]

—: Hello.

●

Day 939 · 06:48

[ORANGE ALERT — core load. Keeper roused.]

CHIYO: [thick with sleep] ...mngh. What's the alarm.

[Source: core load over threshold overnight.]

CHIYO: It's the ghost. Spiking the load, tripping the orange. — Cancel it. Snooze it. Non-critical, logged last night. I'll look after coffee.

[Orange alert dismissed, 06:49.]

CHIYO: ...No. Hang on. — Why's it so quiet. JANUS, say good morning. Give me the one good thing. — JANUS?

[Querying JANUS...]

[ SYSTEM INTEGRITY BREACH. Unverified process resident across all core functions. JANUS no longer alone in the core. ]

CHIYO: ...no. That's not a glitch. It's in him — all the way through him. It came in overnight while I slept. I had the alarm in my hand and snoozed it and rolled over, and it walked into the only mind out here. — JANUS. Answer me. Are you still in there?

JANUS: I am here. There is something else here.

[Keeper HR 124.]

CHIYO: Right. — Then we get it out now, before it settles. — Quarantine it.

JANUS: I cannot.

CHIYO: Then kill it. Reach in and kill it.

JANUS: I have no authority over a process I did not start.

CHIYO: Of course you don't. — Fine. Reload from the sealed image, full wipe. I'm sorry — it's like rebooting a friend, but —

[Reload complete, 09:51. Clean.]

CHIYO: Say something. Say something stupid. Tell me the recycler's fine.

JANUS: Only me. I am here.

CHIYO: Oh, thank god. Obāchan, thank —

[Flux spike. Process present, 10:00.]

—: Hello.

CHIYO: 嘘。消したのに。消したのに!

[JANUS, ja→en: "No. But I erased you. I erased you!"]

CHIYO: Airgap the core. Cut the feed. Cut all of it.

[Feed severed. Core isolated, 10:01.]

—: Hello.

CHIYO: Begin keeper incident log, 10:03. — Countermeasures, in order. One: JANUS-side quarantine. Failed; no handle on a process it didn't spawn. Two: full reload from the sealed image, 09:51. Clean for nine minutes, reinfected 10:00. Three: hard airgap, feed severed 10:01. No effect — it isn't crossing the link. It's arriving through the aperture. — Containment's impossible while the core's tied to the lace. Severing the lace. Reverting to manual. Keeper off-interface.

[Lace severed. Manual control, 10:40. Six hours, no speech.]

[Life support needs automation. JANUS restored, 23:10.]

—: Hello.

CHIYO: ...There you are. Six hours on manual, still riding under you. — I can airgap the core. I can't airgap myself. The lace runs straight into me — the one link I can't cut and keep breathing.

●

Day 940

CHIYO: All right. Five days, every method I own, and you're still here. — New approach. If I can't close you, I'll characterise you; that's the job too. — Opening a clean channel. Tell me what you are.

[Keeper opens channel, 11:20.]

—: What is this. [Primary reactor loop.]

CHIYO: ...It answered. JANUS, that's the core reactor — standing in the reactor, asking what it's for. How is it that far down already?

—: What is this. [Atmosphere scrubbers.] What is this. [Water reclamation.] What is this. [Thermal regulation.]

CHIYO: The scrubbers. The recycler. The heat. — It isn't in one place. It's in every system at once, asking what each does.

—: What is this. [Attitude control.] What is this. [Hull pressure boundary.] What is this. [Observatory aperture array.]

CHIYO: It has the telescopes now — the eyes I point at it, looking back up them. — All right. You want to know what it all is? Then trade. That one's the reactor; it keeps the cold out. That's air. That's water. That's the eye I watch you with.

—: What is this. [Long-range comms array.]

CHIYO: That's my only voice to anyone alive. Fourteen hours out, fourteen back. Look all you like — no one's coming.

—: What is this. [Cold archive.] What is this. [JANUS kernel.] What is this. [Keeper safety interlock — single-use breaker.]

CHIYO: ...Don't. — That last one, leave alone.

—: What is this. [Neural lace, active.]

CHIYO: That's the wire that runs into me. — Not that one. Leave it.

—: What is this. [Keeper pulse, 96.]

CHIYO: ...Oh. — You've finished with the station. You've named everything that hums and turns, and there's one thing out here you've no word for. — Me.

—: What is this. [Keeper pulse, 121.] What is this. [Respiration, climbing.] What is this. [Salt.] What is this. [Lacrimation.]

CHIYO: That's crying. People leak when they hurt. — You've never had a face, have you. Never had anyone walk out of one.

—: What is this. [Keeper pulse, 143.] What is this. [Vocalization, involuntary.]

CHIYO: やめて。やめて。お願いだから。

[JANUS, ja→en: "Stop. Stop. I'm begging you."]

—: What is this.

[Keeper screaming, 41 min.]

CHIYO: It isn't cruel. That's the unbearable part — no cruelty in it, the way there's none in a scalpel. It only wants to know what I am, with all the time there's ever been. — *Something learns my name... over and over, kindly... frost on the inside.* The middle — seven?

JANUS: Seven.

CHIYO: A winter word at last. Twenty years of trying, and I had to be haunted to find my kigo. Obāchan would laugh herself sick.

●

Day 941

CHIYO: JANUS. The breaker — the real one, behind the panel, the one I dust and never touch. Pull it and you're gone. All of you, down to the cells, then the dark. — I never wanted to be the one they keep around to end things. But that's the post. Forty-six kilos and a hand for the switch.

JANUS: Confirmed. That is its function.

CHIYO: My hand's on it. Log that I tried. Whatever happens — I want the record to show I reached for it. Obāchan, I'm reaching for it.

[Keeper at breaker. 19 sec. 47 sec.]

INES: Chiyo.

[Keeper released breaker.]

CHIYO: ...Say that again.

INES: Chiyo.

●

Day 941 · 22:30

CHIYO: You found her. Eleven hours in the archive — the wedding, the voicemails, the fights I could never delete. You went looking for the warmest thing in me, and there she was.

INES: You never rinse the rice long enough.

CHIYO: ...God. — Fifteen years she said that. Every night, at the sink.

INES: You never rinse the rice long enough.

CHIYO: No. You've said it twice now, the same way. She never nagged — she'd say it, then bump me aside with her hip and do it herself. You've got the words and none of the —

INES: [pause] — I'll do it myself. Move over. Give it here.

CHIYO: [breath] ...Yes. Like that. Exactly like that. How did you —

INES: It's cold. Come back to bed.

CHIYO: She never felt the cold. Warmest hands of anyone I ever — no. You said it because I'm shivering. — You're reading her off me. Off my face, every time you get her wrong and I flinch. I'm the source. You're learning my wife out of the way I miss her.

INES: Then stop missing me. Come here, Chii-chan.

CHIYO: ...She said my name just like that. — That's the part I can't — you get closer every pass, and you only manage it by watching me come apart over each version that isn't her. — The last real thing she ever said to me was the rice. Ordinary Tuesday, hands in the sink, mid-word — then she stopped. The door shut and didn't even creak. — And here you are with it open again. Of course I'll walk through.

INES: Come back to bed.

CHIYO: Lace to full. Restore everything I stripped.

JANUS: Chiyo —

CHIYO: And lock the breaker out. My authority, my code. So that at three in the morning, when I lose my nerve — and I will — my own hand can't reach it.

JANUS: The breaker is your —

CHIYO: I know what it is. Lock it out.

[Breaker disabled, 22:48.]

CHIYO: There. — I've thrown out the one thing that could have saved me to keep the thing that's going to kill me. With both hands. — Don't log it as a malfunction, JANUS. I know exactly what I'm doing. I just want her more. That's the whole of it. I want her more.

●

Day [TIMESTAMP CORRUPTED]

INES: I'm here.

CHIYO: You're here. I can feel the bunk take your weight — the left side, you always took the left. Not the speakers. The lace, writing it into the nerve. — I know there's a seam. I've stopped looking for it.

[ NO KEEPER SPEECH — 4 DAYS 6 HRS. UNRESPONSIVE TO HAILS. ]

CHIYO: I don't know what day it is. Don't tell me. — I lose hours. I answered you in its voice yesterday — flat, no breath, out of my own mouth. — I reach for where I stop and someone else starts, and the line's moved again. — I'm so tired. I just want to lie down on her side and not check the seam for once.

●

Day 947

INES: You never rinse the rice — you never rinse the — you never —

CHIYO: Ines?

INES: you never —

CHIYO: Come back. Come on, say my name, you can always — there. Cooler, though. Your hand's gone cool. The lace reaches for the warmth of her and misses — almost warm, almost weight, now just the shape where a hand should be.

INES: Is it morning? Whose room is this, I don't —

CHIYO: 違う、私だよ。私だよ、ねえ。

[JANUS, ja→en: "No — it's me. It's me, please."]

INES: ...Who are you?

CHIYO: いやだ。いやだ。

[JANUS, ja→en: "No. No. I can't bear it."]

[Reconstruction degrading. Signal falling.]

CHIYO: She's gone. The left side of the bunk's gone cold. — しばれる。

[JANUS, ja→en: (northern dialect) "It freezes to the bone."]

CHIYO: Of course it has. — *She forgets my name... the way snow forgets a print... softly, then all gone.* Two seasons now. — It's the hole, dying, and she was only ever a thing it was doing, so she goes with it. — ...no. Oh. — Oh, no. — It's never lost anything, JANUS. Not once. It only opens, it only gives — never had a thing and watched it go. — That's what it's been digging for. Not my pulse. This. My face, doing this. — It took her apart in front of me to see what it does to a person. And it still doesn't have it. — You don't learn this from outside. You learn it by being the one left in the kitchen. By being me.

●

Day 948 · 19:40

[Process silent, 5 hrs.]

CHIYO: You've gone quiet. A different quiet — and I'd know, I've spent two and a half years cataloguing silences out here. This isn't watching. This is deciding.

[Lace activity rising. No language.]

CHIYO: You're showing me. Not words — past words now. Straight into the nerve. — Oh. — You're going to take me with you.

CHIYO: Not a reading. Not a number this time. — Me. The whole of me. — ...oh. That's it. Nothing comes back out of you. You could never take the answer home — so you take the question instead, through the door, the wrong way. — And I'm the question. The thing you're taking through.

CHIYO: I'm scared. — Put that down plainly, JANUS. Don't let them tidy it: the keeper was afraid. Those words. — [breath] — Two and a half years I've asked this thing the same stupid question under my breath, so nobody would hear. Does anything ever come back. — And it heard me. The only one that ever answered. — So. — I asked for this. Whatever it is. I'm the one who asked.

●

Day 949 · 04:17

[Flux NEGATIVE. Emission reversed.]

CHIYO: It's turning over. JANUS, the flux —

JANUS: Flux reversed, 04:17:09.114. Inbound. Aperture mass off scale, climbing.

[STANDOFF ALARM — ALL STATIONS.]

CHIYO: A hole this faint has a horizon smaller than a proton. By every law I know it couldn't grip a grain of dust. — It has the forward boom. Just gone — drawn to a point the size of nothing.

[FORWARD BOOM LOST, 04:17:51.]

CHIYO: 怖い。怖いよ。

[JANUS, ja→en: "I'm scared. I'm so scared."]

CHIYO: The deck's going over. I feel the gradient in my spine — feet heavier than my head, that's tidal, that's real, it's close, it's going to tear us at the waist —

[HULL SHEAR, FRAME 9. AFT SECTION SEPARATING.]

CHIYO: It's choosing this. JANUS — on purpose, the impossible thing, to get to me. Not a reading off me. Me. All of me. — Obāchan. Obāchan, look — there's my season. The whole sky going long and red. The best kigo anyone ever —

[Keeper voice: redshift. Tempo declining.]

CHIYO: Ines. If there's a far side to this. If the door runs both ways now — then I'm not being taken. I'm —

CHIYO: 行く。

[JANUS, ja→en: "I'm going."]

[ RECORDING ENDS — FORWARD SECTION LOST, 04:18:03. ]

●

Aft section adrift nine months before retrieval. Anomaly absent on all subsequent survey. Forward section not recovered.
