City of Radiance
Behind the Window
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room.
Life in the City of Radiance was anything but what it seemed. While it seemed beautiful and grand, beneath its polished surface lurked a seedy underworld of injustice and oppression. No one knew this better than Violet, who had grown up within its walls. Those walls created a life of isolation that sheltered darkness. Overtime the walls felt normal, as life offered painful insight. Happiness and laughter were rare echoes through the gutted brick buildings, that once were renovated. Slums of poverty, filth, and embarrassment for those left behind. Tears were the only sense of life that most knew all to well.
Violet lived with her family in the worst area of the city - a forgotten slum filled with run-down houses, hidden from view by tall walls that surrounded the perimeter. There were no windows in the houses in the slum; instead, all windows faced away from it, toward the richer parts of town. The only time Violet ever got to glimpse the outside world was when she sneaked away to his room at night.
The window in his room faced outward toward the City of Radiance beyond, and each night Violet would stand there looking out at the illuminated streets and skyscrapers - something she could only dream of living in one day. Street lights glared on the old stained glass, Violet admired straining out the last hidden window that offered a dream life. The bright lights blurred into one another until they disappeared off into some unknown distance. It felt like looking into an entire other world - a world full of possibility, if only she could get to it.
Each night, Violet would return home feeling inspired but hopeless; yet still, she couldn’t help but wonder what lay beyond those glowing streets and towers she so often stared out upon from his window. One day, she told herself, she would find out for sure - no matter how long it took her or what obstacles stood in her way.
Violet stood at the window of his room and gazed out into the City of Radiance beyond, its glowing streets and illuminated skyscrapers stretching far into the distance. She felt a pang of longing for a life outside of her slum - a world filled with possibility that she yearned to explore one day. Despite the odds stacked against her, Violet was determined to find a way to reach this place and experience all it had to offer. With newfound motivation and hope in her heart, she looked upon the city lights with optimism and promise for the future.
Dreaming of a nice dress and city lights that offered opportunity. Violet needed a plan to get her there. What will it take to have clean attire, suitable education, and a mind to inspire a dream? Why would those in the Slums stay in such filthy living conditions? Violet knew life in the city would offer so much more.
One evening Violet stood at the window staring until a city she needed more than anything. She asked him, “do you dream of the people, living, and opportunity in the City?” He answered short and firm, “just from the window.” Violet was confused, he added, if you must got, I shall open the window for you.
Violet watched lights melt in circular motion blending while running down the window. Rain droplets created an illusion that looked like melted glass. That sense of fear filled Violet’s shoes, her hands became sweaty, - “well you can’t think about going, if you dream of the city!”. Have you experienced the city? Have you? Violet, it’s exciting to think about, but painful being alone. You have to think with your mind, and go or that dream is just a broken window.
The rain droplets got loud as Violet stood in deep thought. Every second forward - rain danced from the window seal. A heart raced and beat to an induced rhythm, faster in sync, with the pouring rain.
Violet opened the old stained glass window, the rush of excitement felt cold and bitter. Stepping back quickly, his voice announced, the city is scary from behind the window. Here you can see all you hope for and dream. If you join the city, the window points to us. It’s your choice dream of the city? Or live in the slums and know all the answers to a dream you once lived. Not every window has the same effects.
Tears filled her eyes, can I come back to dream from your window tomorrow? Dreams behind the windows might be luxury in the heart. The mind offers an illusion, that points back to a where you are… The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. He stood beside her watching the dream fade into rain droplets. Behind the window - Violet can dream and not be heart broke by imagining a world in her mind. From behind the old stained window inside looking out.. A heart can dream and feel luxury. To change the dream you must explore beyond the window. Violet, stood watching the same life fade before her eyes. An illusion of the heart to dream and a life to allow the mind to create a dream without sacrifice or punishment.
