choose another path

By NDOL GAMINGPublished about a month ago 2 min read

Lena had always been the type to follow a plan. She had a color-coded calendar, a meticulously organized to-do list, and a five-year plan that mapped out every step of her career. She was the kind of person who always knew what was next. Or at least, she thought she did.

One Friday afternoon, Lena found herself staring blankly at her computer screen in her tiny office cubicle. She was supposed to be working on a presentation for a big client, but instead, she was daydreaming about all the things she’d rather be doing—like traveling the world, learning to play the guitar, or starting her own little coffee shop. She sighed, shaking her head to snap out of it.

That evening, she met up with her best friend, Jess, at their favorite local café. Over a couple of lattes, Lena confessed, “I don’t know, Jess. I just feel like I’m stuck in a rut. I mean, I have a good job, but I’m not happy. I’m just…existing.”

Jess, ever the free spirit, grinned and said, “Why don’t you do something about it? Take a different path. Who says you have to follow the same plan forever?”

Lena laughed it off at first, but the idea stuck with her. That night, she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling and thinking about all the things she’d dreamed of doing but had never pursued. By the time her alarm went off the next morning, she had made a decision.

With a mix of excitement and anxiety, Lena walked into her boss’s office and handed in her resignation. “I need to find out what else is out there for me,” she explained, half expecting her boss to be furious. Instead, he gave her a knowing smile.

“I’m proud of you, Lena,” he said. “It takes guts to choose another path. Go find what makes you happy.”

And so, Lena did. She bought a one-way ticket to Europe, something she’d always dreamed of but never dared to do. She backpacked through Italy, France, and Spain, meeting new people and learning about different cultures. She took up photography and discovered she had a real talent for capturing the beauty in everyday moments. She even learned to play a few songs on the guitar from a fellow traveler she met in a hostel in Barcelona.

After a few months on the road, Lena found herself in a quaint village in Portugal, where she stumbled upon a charming little café that was up for sale. On a whim, she bought it with her savings. She named it “Another Path” and turned it into a cozy haven for travelers and locals alike. The walls were adorned with her photographs, and she hosted live music nights where she and other musicians could perform.

Years later, Lena’s café became a beloved fixture in the village, known for its welcoming atmosphere and delicious pastries. Lena often thought back to that Friday afternoon in her cubicle and smiled, grateful that she had taken the leap to choose another path. She had found happiness, not in following a plan, but in embracing the unknown and following her heart.

One evening, as the sun set over the village, casting a golden glow through the café windows, Lena picked up her guitar and played a song she’d learned long ago. The café was filled with laughter and music, and Lena felt a deep sense of contentment. She had chosen another path, and it had led her to exactly where she was meant to be.
