Charon the Ferryman's last call.

A soul's Last Chance for the journey to his final destination.

By Novel AllenPublished 2 months ago • 5 min read

Liam’s last call begins in the silence between two rivers ~ Styx to his left, black as spilled ink, and Acheron to his right, grey as mourning smoke. The air is metallic, a strange mixture of iron and hopeless penitent prayers. The dead move like drifting shadows, but Liam…Liam is different. He is about to become the Unpaid.

The forlorn man was not quite sure how he had arrived here, everything was a blur of entangled memories. He remembers only snippets of the last few days. He sees glimpses of himself in the hospital room months ago - The doctor saying that he had waited too long to be diagnosed...months to live... a flurry of family fussing, crying, hugging...nothing the doctors can do...go home to be with family...enjoy the time you have left being with your loved ones.

His mind is jolted to the present by the hoarse, grating voice of the ferryman.

"Last Call, last call for the souls which now belong to Hades. Last call for the boat ride to your final destination".

The bell tolled, and the ominous, gloomy and chilling voice announced his fate for the last time.

Then all became eerily silent.

The grim ferryman Charon, waits as the dead line up, as he stands at the edge of the rivers Styx and Acheron. Gently, slowly, carefully, he had guided his boat across the dark boundary of waters separating the world of the living from the realm of Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld.

Now, he waits patiently for Liam. But...alas, poor Liam has no coin to pay his passage on Charon's boat...No one gave him his Obol...his coin was not placed on his mouth at his funeral during the rites.

And now, lost! He has become the 'Unpaid'. If you cannot pay...then you are doomed to wander the shores of Styx and Acheron for 100 years.

🜁 The Moment when Realization dawns.

When Liam first awakens on the shore, he reaches instinctively for his pockets — thus evermore, is the human gesture carried past death ~ but he finds nothing. No obol. No coin. No final kindness had been placed upon his tongue.

Charon watches him from the boat, his lantern swinging like a dying star. The ferryman’s eyes are hollow, but not cruel. He simply waits. He always waits.

And when Liam steps forward, Charon lifts a skeletal hand.

“No coin. No crossing.”

The words fall like stones.

Liam is pushed back by an unseen force, a tide of fate itself. The boat drifts away, leaving him on the cold sand.

Why had he become one of the Unpaid, condemned to wander the shores for a century...he wondered.

🜂 The First Years of The Echoing Shore

The shores are not empty. They are filled with others like him ~ souls who were forgotten, lost, buried without rites, or loved by people who did not know the old customs.

They drift in slow circles, whispering to themselves, repeating memories - singing broken hymns and reciting sad lamentations.

But Liam does not drift. He walks. He learns the terrain:

  • The jagged rocks where the river Styx hisses like a serpent

  • The fog-thick marshes of Acheron where voices rise from the mud

  • The skeletal trees that grow without leaves, fed by grief and sorrow

He discovers that the Unpaid are not entirely powerless. They can shape the mist. They can call forth echoes of their past. They can speak to the river itself, though it never answers.

Liam begins to gather stories from the other Unpaid ~~~ tales of long forgotten funerals, lost coins, and families who never knew the rites. He becomes a kind of wanderer‑scholar, a keeper of the neglected dead.

🜃 The Middle Years and meeting The Bargainers

Around the twentieth year, Liam encounters the Bargainers — spirits who try to earn their passage by performing tasks for the underworld.

Some attempt to catch the river’s phantom fish.
Some try to carve messages into the stones for Hades’ servants.
Some try to steal coins from the newly dead.

Most fail. But Liam watches. Learns. Tries.

He attempts to carve a message for Hecate, goddess of thresholds, hoping she might pity him. The stone cracks. The message vanishes.

He tries to catch the river’s fish ~ they dissolve in his hands.

He tries to steal a coin from a newly arrived soul — but Charon’s gaze freezes him in place.

Still, Liam persists. He becomes known among the Unpaid as the one who refuses to surrender.

🜄 The Final Years - When The Whisper of the Rivers echo anew.

Time here is linear - it stretches but never changes. Here, every day is like the one before, and the one before that.

By the eightieth year, Liam begins to hear something new.

A whisper.

It wasn't from the dead. Nor from Charon. It was not even from the wind.

It was from the rivers themselves.

Styx whispers of oaths broken.
Acheron whispers of grief unspoken.

They speak to him because he has walked their shores longer than most. Because he has listened. Because he has not given in to despair.

The rivers begin to shape themselves around him ~ forming patterns in the water, ripples that resemble symbols. Liam learns to read them. He becomes a kind of river‑seer, interpreting the murmurs of the underworld.

Some Unpaid come to him for guidance.
Some come for comfort.
Some come simply to hear a voice that still remembers hope.

Liam becomes a legend among the forgotten dead.

🜁 The Hundredth Year: The Return of the Ferryman

On the final night of his hundredth year, the rivers fall silent.

The fog parts.

Charon’s boat glides toward him, lantern glowing brighter than ever before.

The ferryman does not ask for a coin.

He simply nods.

Because the law is clear:
A soul who has wandered the shores for a hundred years earns their passage.

Liam steps onto the boat.
The river does not resist him.
The dead watch in reverent silence.

Charon rows.

And as the boat drifts into the darkness, Liam feels the weight of his century fall away ~ not forgotten, but transformed.

His last call had taken 100 years. But,...it seemed like only yesterday since he had grown into something, someone much wiser, much stronger than he had ever been.

He now crosses without coin, but not without worth.
