Chapter 39: interpretation of her love
I am Bexley: The Bloodletter’s Scourge. Song is “Let me be your wings,” from the cartoon movie Thumbelina.
Hey this is your girl Cara again. I am used to writing stuffs out for zombies and ‘Letters by now and honestly it feels kinda weird like relief to be there for my friends. I am a human woman but still. It’s rare. Rare to find such good friends. I miss Indigo ever since she ran away from our group and I know I’m not the only one.
If zombies and Bloodletters could cry, oh boy. Let me tell you! My boy Amory, if he was human, he’d be sobbing. And by Bloodletter standard, I’d say he did cry, in his own way. I sang this special song to him that my sister Emma and I heard it growing up, like a lullaby. It’s called, “Let me be your wings,” And it’s a love song. I don’t know exactly where it’s from but it’s pretty.
Emma started singing the girl parts in this obnoxious way. I shoved her, shushing her, but she only got louder, laughing while she sang in this high falsetto tone. So annoying. My kid sis is so corny. She knows exactly how to get my goat. I love her but dang do I want to kick her butt sometimes.
I’ll never forget the look on Amory’s face when he signed for us to run. Something about his eyes were beyond terrifying, like he was in a dream or a nightmare that never ended. His face was disfigured from that strange fit he had(I talked with Ben and Emma and we think it was demon possession or something), but not beyond recognition. He always had a calm demeanor even when he seemed shaken.
While Amory was resting next to Stan, who is still recovering from his catatonic shock, I realized that Amory was shaking. I gently pressed my hands on his chest, compressing his body, like his arms and legs. I learned from my mama that this helps some people during severe stress and panic attacks. Amory slowly stopped shaking then I went up and took out my old pipes to sing for both of my fallen friends.
“I miss her calling me dude,” I laughed after I sang the song, telling Ben, my boyfriend.
“Indigo was a tough customer but you somehow got her to trust you, I don’t even know how,” Ben replied.
“I think it’s cause I got invisible Angel wings, and people sense I’m a very strong soul,” I teased and Ben grinned, kissing my forehead.
“I see it. I remember seeing those Angel wings the first time I laid eyes on you,” Ben flirted.
I laughed with a snort, “Damn, you slick. Boy, you too fast for me!”
Ben laughed as I wrapped my arms around his waist pulling him close as we nuzzled our noses together.
“Sometimes I feel I’m Not fast enough!” Ben concluded and we both laughed.
Ben and the others went to scout out fire wood and potentially something to eat (hunt a rabbit probably?) as I tended to the sickly ones. Emma stayed too, helping me to clean them up and get them Comfortable.
Amory started gurgling, groaning and squeaking. I sang it again. Softer.
“Into, in… Indigo…” Amory weakly signed.
Emma gasped. “Your silly song woke him up!” Emma exclaimed.
I jabbed her with my elbow, “You must’ve woke up half of Missouri with your screeching!”
Emma gave me a softer look. “No I meant it in a good way. Look at him.”
“Please… tell her…. Please….” Amory signed, his eyes bloody and weak, but I could see a very small hint of blue.
“Your eyes are blue, man, I bet that’s why Indigo likes ya,” I teased, trying to put some stray fabric we had to put under his head.
“You like to mess with him too much, huh,” Emma scoffed. I shook my head.
“Nah. He gets me. He’s my boy,” I said haughtily. Emma rolled her big old brown eyes, reminding me of daddy. He was a serious man but had a very different way when he felt safe. He was a serious sweetheart, my mama would say, but he did have a sarcastic streak too.
“Write her…” He signed. I felt a soft, warm breeze hit us as he desperately signed his wishes, his hands looking pained and arthritic almost.
I got out my sketchbook which doubled as my journal. I had an itching feeling to read the poems that Indigo wrote about him but I kinda felt like that would be breaching her trust.
“I saw Cara scratch pictures down on paper…..” Amory signed, trying to sit up but he was a stiff as a board.
Almost more stiff than Stan, who was lying down next to him.
“Yeah, man. I draw stuff sometimes. I doodle, really,” I chuckled. “What do you want me to draw?”
“To that words you say, draw Indigo, me, dance, using our hands to dance, to dance,” Amory signed weakly.
I nodded. “Yeah. That’s super nice. Ok. Anything else?”
“Humans,” Amory signed over and over. I blinked. Emma blinked at the same time.
“We were… we used to be…” Amory started to sign.
“Humans!” Emma and I said together.
“You two were once humans?!” Emma almost screamed. I covered my ears like when we were kids.
“Girl! Can you not wake up the neighbors in Chicago with your shrill voice?” I said lowly.
I started sketching the dance. They were in a flower, and Indigo was resting her head on a petal, wearing a white dress. Amory was wearing a suit. I made them human. Amory was singing in a thought bubble, “Let me be your wings, let me be your only love,” and she’s singing, “Wondrous things are sure to happen!”
His eyes so blue. Her eyes, I remember they were milky white. The most milky white I ever seen. Like the milk I dreamed of growing up that I wished I could drink.
“That’s why she’s My Moon,” Amory signed as I explained her white eyes.
I then put the moon in her eyes, with the stars twinkling behind them in the air, with shiny human hair and bright skin.
