Chapter 1:- The Chance Encounter

Chapter 1:- The Chance Encounter
It was the start of the monsoon in the city and there was finally relief from the bewitching heat that had gotten its claws onto the city for weeks. Rain fell in gentle sheets, and the streets had a shiny gloss to them, with the smell of wet earth. Shillong appeared to slow down; it was as if even the people were enjoying the coolness. Among honking cars and hurried strides of strangers, two lives were about to collide in the most improbable fashion.
Riya walked along a busy sidewalk gripping her umbrella tightly, her mind miles away from the bustling street. Just off a shift at the local bookstore, her sanctuary from the world, a shop where she could get lost among the dusty old novels, swaddled in their sweet smell. Rain was her favourite kind of weather; it was as if time had paused, an opportunity to contemplate life’s twists and turns.
But today, there was a weight in her heart. She had just moved to Shillong two months ago, seeking distance from her happy-go-lucky life. A noisy segment of the earth known as Mumbai, full of noise, memory and sorrow, was still a part of her that she was trying to escape. After a broken engagement, she had become wary of love, and was intent on re-building her life on her terms, without the complications of relationships.
As Riya walked through the wet streets, her thoughts a storm of emotions, not even noticing the man walking toward her, his face buried in his phone. He was tall, with sharp features, dressed in a crisp white shirt, already half-soaked despite his attempts to shield himself with his jacket. He was in a hurry, completely engrossed in an urgent email, oblivious to his surroundings.
In the blink of an eye, their paths collided. Riya's umbrella hit his shoulder with a loud thud, causing her to stumble backward. Her heart skipped a beat as her thoughts snapped back to reality. The man, startled, dropped his phone and quickly reached out to steady her before she could fall.
"I'm so sorry! I wasn't looking—" the man began, but Riya cut him off.
No, it's my mistake," Riya said quickly, blushing her cheeks in embarrassment. "I should have paid more attention.
They stood there for a moment, awkwardly holding onto each other, their gazes finally meeting. His dark eyes, warm and apologetic, held hers for longer than she expected. For a fleeting second, the bustling city around them seemed to fade away, and all Riya could hear was the soft patter of rain on their umbrellas.
"I. uh, here's your phone," Riya said, breaking the silence as she bent down to retrieve the device from the puddle it had landed in.
The man chuckled, a low, pleasant sound that made her smile in spite of herself. "Well, that's one way to meet someone. Not the most graceful, but memorable.
Riya handed him the phone, and he took it with a grateful nod. “Thanks. I’m Arjun, by the way,” he introduced himself, holding out his hand.
“Riya,” she replied, shaking his hand briefly, the warmth of his touch surprising her in the cool rain. “Nice to meet you. And again, sorry for the umbrella thing.”
No harm done," Arjun smiled. "Honestly, I should be thanking you. I needed a reason to stop staring at my phone for once." He gestured to the chaotic scene around them. "It's such a beautiful day, despite the rain."
Riya raised an eyebrow, looking at him with mild disbelief. "You find this beautiful?
He shrugged and smiled more broadly. "I do. There is something soothing, don't you think? The rain, that is. The world gets quieter, even in a noisy city like this, somehow.
Riya could not help but agree, though she did not say so. There was something about Arjun's perspective that intrigued her. She had always thought of the rain as her own personal escape, but here was someone who saw it just as she did — a gentle reprieve from the chaos of life.
So, you live around here?" Arjun tried to make some small talk. He had noticed the faraway look in her eyes earlier and wondered if there was something more to the story than a trivial bump on the sidewalk.
"Sort of," Riya replied hesitantly. "I moved here recently. Still trying to get sorted.
Ah, a fellow newcomer!" Arjun's eyes lit up. "I came here six months ago for work. It's a bit different from Mumbai, don't you think?"
Riya stiffened at the mention of Mumbai. It was a name she had been trying to forget. But Arjun didn't notice her sudden discomfort. "I mean, Shillong is quieter, greener, and the people are friendlier. But there's a charm in that, I guess.
She made herself smile. "Yeah, definitely quieter."
Arjun tilted his head to one side, aware of her not wanting to talk about the past, but he didn't pursue it further. "Well, if you ever need a guide to show you around, let me know," he said with a laugh. "I've managed to find some cool spots. Cafes, hiking trails, places to escape the city for a bit.
Riya nodded hesitantly. She wasn't ready to start making friends yet, let alone trust anyone again after everything that had happened to her. However, there was something about Arjun that seemed to make her feel. relaxed. His candid, easy nature was a nice respite from the closed-off, icy world she'd escaped.
"Well, I should get going," said Arjun after a pause, casting his eyes down at his phone, which was now water-stained. "But seriously, it was nice running into you, Riya. Maybe we'll cross each other's paths again, in circumstances less clumsy."
Riya smiled softly, feeling this odd pull of disappointment as he made his way to leave. "Yeah, maybe."
She remained there standing still, with her heart beating slightly faster than it had been just a few moments ago. She didn't understand why, but the encounter kept popping up in her head. There was something about that smile of Arjun's; it felt almost familiar, comforting even. This was the first time in so long that someone had managed to crack the walls she had put up around herself.
Shaking her head, she continued walking, trying to push the encounter from her thoughts. It was just a random meeting — nothing more. After all, she had come to Shillong to start fresh, to focus on herself, to avoid any more distractions or entanglements.
But as the rain continued to fall, and the city hummed with life around her, Riya couldn't help but wonder if perhaps fate had other plans.
And so, unknowingly, Riya had already started the first chapter of a new story that was to be full of unexpected moments, second chances, and maybe, just maybe, love finding its way through the rain.
