“Happy Mother’s Day Mum,” Angie sang.

Mandy smiled lovingly at her daughter. She loved this day as the family congregated in her kitchen to cooked breakfast together.

Laid upon the counter were the ingredients to make each family member an omelette, dependent on the variation of individual tastebuds.

At the very edge of the counter, away from all other ingredients, sat a lonely bowl. Inside, rested a piece of stinky haddock. All family members, bar one, detested the smell of this fish, but it was a variation Mandy’s son insisted on including in his omelette, much to the family’s disgust.

I was challenged to write a drabble of the word ‘variation'.

Wikipedia defines a drabble as follows :

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in a confined space.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Despite the smell, does that fish taste good? Loved your drabble!
