Brandon and the Emerald

A Boy and His Emerald

By Kayley Ross Published 5 years ago 5 min read

England was filled with beauty; everywhere one would turn; The boy would always face something mesmerizing before him. Brandon had always loved the brilliant views of the bustling city, including during the night, for that was when people would capture such tremendous displays of lights and art of all sorts. Any night for Brandon was considered a given, for being stuck within the attic of an old rundown orphanage was never an acceptable domain. The boy watched as the stars twinkled within the sky above and as the moon's rays shun brightly across the lakes and rivers, even as the cars and people walked by socializing with one another or with themselves, possibly speaking to someone on the blower.

Brandon always wanted to feel that emotion, love. He envied those people, being an adult or just being with their beloved families; it must’ve been nice not needing to sit and wait for a family to find interest in you when you already had one who loved you immensely. It didn’t have to be a romantic sort of love, something platonic was quite enough, anything that could help with his lonesome world.

On those days, the boy would wander out, avoiding most if not all people as he played in the garden all on his own, holding a single wool knitted bunny with two black button doe eyes with one torn from the seems but still hanging on by a thread. At the same time, an ear lazily lost all its stuffing and dangled about, with the other poking straight up without any retaliation. It was the last thing he’s ever owned that had belonged to his original family, Mr. Carrots was his name, a childish thing at that, but it was one he would cherish for the remainder of his little life.

The Boy would wander off within the Gardens, playing make-believe with his little bunny friend, each time he’d always have a new fun adventure. At some point, he’d even imagined his little friend would walk and talk on his own, doing everything it possibly could to help the young lad stay happy, for even he, a little old torn toy, had seen all that Brandon had gone through throughout the years. Only he, the little old bunny named Mr. Carrots, seemed to understand all the suffering and loneliness he had to endure. Each day was a new adventure, a new tale to be told, and a new life the boy happily had gotten the chance to live.

Today, however, was an entirely new adventure, for, in this, the boy didn’t even need to be within the Garden for his imagination to grow. Everything around him had changed, from the way he was dressed to the way his room within the old orphanage attic had appeared. He was trapped within a new world entirely, his little bunny friend by Brandon's side with all his glory, holding a sword and shield to help defend his friend. An adventure had begun, with a lone little boy wearing a green hood and brown leather armor; within this new tale, he was the archer, and his bunny friend was his knight.

A story of a boy and his bunny was fighting against a horde of mysterious beings, going through tremendous amounts of challenging quests that soon led to many different areas and monsters. The boy and little rabbit went on a journey to save this utopia of a world, search sent upon them to find a green Emerald trapped within the grasp of an evil warlock and safely return it to the queen before the evil warlock had brought the total darkness upon the land.

The pair were sent on their way, given the opportunity to go home or stay within this world. At first, both the boy and rabbit wanted nothing more than to return home, in the confines of their tolerable worn-out bed and a dusty room covered with cobwebs and dust bunnies. Still, the boy was greedy and felt as though this world was where he had belonged, a place where he didn’t have to worry about being alone and unloved; there, he was safe, loved, and a hero to all alongside his bunny friend. Mr. Carrots, however, was not too keen on this new revelation; in fact, he wanted nothing more than to pursue his friend into believing that there has to be a place back home for him and that he wasn’t alone A vast adventure in which lasted far longer than any of his usual fantasies continued even after the duo were capable of retrieving the small item they were ordered to return.

Time after time, quest after quest, the boy felt alone once more after he argued with his one and only true friend. He wanted nothing more than to return to the confines of his trusted ally, but it wasn’t enough, and he knew that nothing ever would, not for him to obtain at least. He fought every monster and every villain just to return to his friend. Just when Brandon was bound to give up and accept the thought of remaining alone for all of eternity, his friend appeared from within the shadows and pulled him on his way to tranquility, back into the world they had belonged.

The boy held his bunny much tighter than he ever had before, enjoying the calming feeling it had given him from all that had occurred. As the moon descended and the sun rose from its wistful slumber, a new bright sunny day arrived for the pair to play another day within their world of imagination. As Brandon scurried off within the gardens to enjoy some time with his little rabbit, a sudden hand from the mistress of the orphanage slithered its way across his shoulder, snaking him back within the building and into the one single room all kids who were to be adopted would go.

Brandon shook from anticipation and fear from the sudden realization that he was about to belong to a new family, a home of his very own dawned on him. He smiled as he was introduced to a very loving couple; the mother wore a simple blue dress and white victorian bonnet as she held a tiny baby within her delicate painted hands, while the father stood with broad shoulders and a hefty brown beard, wearing a simple suit and tie topped with a casual top hat.

This was the very beginning of a little boy's long-lived dream come true, a new home and family he will grow to love and praise—A place where he could truly belong.
