The fire lit the area as the darkness surrounded it. The night was dry, showing the end of summer. The trees were tall, barely visible in the surrounding darkness. Stars sparked overhead, too numerous to count. Andrew looked at the sky as the night continued, letting his thoughts wander among the many stars and the galaxies. He had a calmness he had not seen in months of working in a big city, a quiet comfort far from the deadlines and busyness back home. Looking up, he realized how small his stresses seemed under the endless sky in this small world. A longing grew inside him to hold onto this silence, this feeling of belonging to seeing something bigger than himself. The fire flickered, burning through its last logs and turning into ashes. This trip was the perfect outdoor escape. When the fire was nearly out, Andrew grabbed the bucket of water and doused it. Only Andrew's flashlight lit the way as he walked to his tent. The night was beautiful, but morning would soon arrive. He needed rest to enjoy his last day before returning to work. Before settling in, he took one final look at the stars, promising himself he would remember this trip and the calm it brought to him.
As the car was packed with all the supplies, the campsite looked empty now. There was no tent or table remaining. The fire pit was full of embers doused from the previous night, though the occasional spark was not seen. Andrew wished he could stay longer in this peaceful place. Home was the next stop, back to the busy city of Los Angeles. This spot gave peace and quiet, but leaving meant returning to chaos. As Andrew got into his car, the wind began to pick up. He realized a storm was coming soon and knew he needed to leave on time. Driving through the large trees, he said goodbye and promised to return one day. This weeklong trip was exactly what he needed to escape his busy city life.
Andrew sat at his desk in his cubicle. The buzzing noises of phones and computers around him made it hard to concentrate. He decided to check the internet for news to distract himself. He scrolled endlessly, only to find minor stories. Andrew longed to return to the peaceful woods. Just as he was about to close his browser, a breaking news story appeared. The forest where he camped was now ablaze. Aerial footage showed miles of trees burning out of control. Fire crews were battling the flames. The news anchor reported that the fire might have started from a campfire, as an ember appeared to have survived. Andrew recognized the area and watched in horror,, only questioning whether he had truly doused out his fire. He did not recall leaving a live fire and knew no one else had been there, but how would he know? He pushed the thought aside as his boss walked by to annoy everyone. Andrew quickly got back to work, anxious about being reprimanded. He was sure that he had doused the fire with water, but worried he might have missed an ember. Andrew tried to focus on work and ignore the troubling news report. The fire still crept into his mind, only to question everything that happened out there.
Authorities ruled that the blaze was started by human activity rather than lightning. News coverage became relentless, and Andrew watched the situation helplessly from home. The beautiful forest was now engulfed in flames, though he was certain that he had extinguished his campfire completely. The fire was growing uncontrollable, and Andrew even avoided watching television. The evenings became tense, and he feared the police might soon arrive at his door, yet no one came to question him. He hoped the real culprit would be found and that it was not him. Andrew stopped checking the news because even the photos were painful reminders of his guilt. As the news reports continued each day, he could not ignore the growing guilt pressing on his mind: the blame he might have unwittingly caused extensive damage to the beautiful nature. The sense of what he had done, and a deepened sense of how fragile the wilderness truly is. Thoughts of his role and impact invaded his mind, making him face questions of accountability. He tried to avoid any updates, but the fire became the main topic of conversation everywhere. As the blaze neared the large city, the situation became more dangerous. Andrew was ready to answer questions, but hoped his involvement would never be discovered. He went to work with a racing mind, seeking distraction during one of California's worst wildfires. Each day, he simply tried to make it through, hoping the fire would soon succumb.
The city bustled as usual, with no sign of immediate danger, yet Andrew remembered the countless stars from his trip from the peace and quiet of the wilderness. Life in the city was always rushed, and driving in heavy traffic was part of his normal routine. Even the stress of city life could not keep the forest fire from his mind despite the peace it gave him. The fire continued its rampage across the state, worsened by the dry summer, and authorities searched for the cause nightly on the news. Andrew isolated himself, listening to growing speculation about how the fire began. Many times, he wanted to share any information he had, but was afraid to admit he might have missed a live ember at the campsite. Nightmares plagued him as his mind would not rest, and each night was filled with cold sweats as if he were in the fire. The exhaustion from regret grew each day, affecting his very work performance and drawing his bosses' attention to his unfinished work, though Andrew tried hard to keep up.
Finally, the news brought some relief as the fire waned, thanks to the rainfall that was truly needed. Several communities were saved as firefighters fought the flames. Andrew felt slightly relieved as reports improved and he remained unidentified. Police were no longer seen as such a threat. The fire was nearly contained, and news outlets reported they were close to identifying a suspect. Andrew just hoped he was not being tracked and that his face would not appear online. If another person were named as the suspect, he would feel safe. Now that the fire was contained, Andrew found some peace, and his nightmares faded. He rested better, but no suspect had been officially named yet. Each day, he returned to his normal routine. As the blaze was put out, it hardly seemed to matter to the city. Life resumed, and Andrew could feel peace again.
The morning heat felt pleasant on his skin as Andrew headed to work. He felt relaxed despite heavy traffic, and the city’s energy suited him. The fear of being arrested was no longer on his mind as he settled into his usual routine. Andrew had a productive day at work; tasks seemed to accomplish themselves. Suddenly, sweat gathered on his forehead as he noticed police officers walking through the cubicles. His heart was ready to jump out of his chest as they seemed to approach his area. Andrew hoped they were not looking for him. He tried to remain calm and act normal despite his rising anxiety. This time would tell if he was under suspicion. Andrew focused on his computer, slowed his breathing, and waited, hoping he was in the clear as they seemed to move closer.
He sat in no peace of mind, only wondering if it was he who had set the fire. All the questions were rushing through his mind, but maybe the cops would walk past him. Was his life over in the most innocent of actions? Andrew could only remind himself that his life was not over, even if he was the one who started the fire. His fate would be determined one way or another as he stared at his computer.
