Behind the Glass

Utopia can’t be paradise

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. He had rushed her into his apartment as the red smoke had settled in their town.

She was left to her own devices most of the time. She hadn't been born when she’d been saved. The outside world seemed to merge creation with nature. Buildings seemed to change, flora combining with metal and concrete.

He had told her she would be safe, the walls would protect her from The Red. He never explained what The Red was or who it was just that it was deadly. He pounded into her head that it was a pain like none she could ever imagine.

The days blended together. Only the weekly broadcasts reminded her of where in the year she had landed. The Sister of Education made a lesson and an announcement every week. Mostly to teach the Sheltered what was right and true to The Faith.
