“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked, voice barely above a whisper. The rain tapped steadily against the window, each drop sounding like a ticking clock counting down the seconds.

He didn’t look up. Instead, his gaze settled on the flickering candle between them, its flame dancing nervously in the draft.

“I thought you’d never understand,” he said finally, his voice rough, weighed down by years of secrets.

Her eyes narrowed, searching his face. “Try me. I’m still here.”

He swallowed hard, running a hand through his damp hair. “It’s not just about what I did. It’s who I am.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and cold.

“What do you mean?” Her voice shook slightly, a mixture of fear and hope.

He took a slow breath. “I’ve been hiding this for so long... but I’m running out of time. There’s something coming, something I can’t stop.”

She reached across the table, her fingers trembling as they touched his. “Whatever it is, we face it together.”

For the first time, he met her gaze fully—eyes filled with a flicker of something like trust, or maybe desperation.

Outside, the storm raged on, but inside that small room, the silence between them was louder than thunder.
