Last Night
They met outside a bar and grill.
"Lucas?"
"Oh my God, Sally! I haven't seen you since the high school grad party."
"That was quite a night. How's Cindy?"
"We divorced almost two years ago. She wanted kids and I felt strongly against it. This world is fucked up enough without adding my prodigy to the chaos."
"Oh, come on. You're nothing like your parents. You had a wild streak, but you cleaned up well.
"I'm always fighting that wild instinct. Coach Johnson helped, and then the army. But what about you? You look great."
"Thanks, Lucas. I graduated from law school four years ago. I was on track for partner at my dad's firm, but Mom has cancer. That's why I'm back home."
"I'm so sorry. Hey, do you have time for a drink?"
She blushed and tucked her hair behind her ear. "Um, yeah, sure, I guess. My sister is with Mom."
He opened the door for her and admitted, "Sally, I had such a thing for you back then, but you were way out of my league."
"No way! Why didn't you speak up? I kept hoping, but you were with Cindy, so I stayed out of it."
Last Call
The two chatted until the bartender announced last call. Sally gave him her phone number and said, "Call me tomorrow?"
"Absolutely."
She was glad she lived close so she could walk home after drinking. She took about 10 steps when her phone rang.
"Hello?"
"It's me, Lucas. I couldn't wait for tomorrow. Come back and we'll share my Uber.
"Fine, but I'm paying my part."
"Whatever you say."
Last Ditch Effort
"So, Sally, where do you want to be dropped off once our ride comes?"
"Where do you want me to go?"
"Ideally, home with me."
"I wouldn't be averse. What are you doing?"
"Something I should have done 12 years ago. I'm about to kiss you."
They didn't come up for air until the driver pulled up.
Good While it Lasted
Kissing and fondling their way to the door, Lucas fumbled with his keys. Hand in hand, he led her to the bedroom. They practically tore each other's clothes off and didn't waste any time getting to his bed. Both were satisfied in short order.
Lucas chuckled. "Give me some time and we'll do that a bit slower."
"Sounds lovely, although I liked our first effort a lot. You put on some music, and I'll grab that bottle of wine I saw on top of your fridge."
"Perfect! I'll count the seconds you're gone... One, two..."
"I'm not even out the door you... dork!" She threw her bra at him and donned his shirt.
She was searching cupboards for glasses when the key rattled and the door opened.
"Oh, hello. Wait! I know you. Sally, right?"
"Yes, and you're Cindy." She felt her nose wrinkle and cheeks redden unbidden.
"Playing with my husband? Never mind, he always enjoys variety. Care to make it a threesome? His last mistress was a firecracker." She sighed. "Fun times."
"No... he said... I'll just go."
"Suit yourself. Take the wine if you like. I brought some more."
Last Time
Tears of humiliation streamed down Sally's face as she walked the dark streets wearing nothing but a man's shirt. She realized she had left not only her clothes, but also her purse and phone.
She vowed to never again sleep with a man she had just met - technically, reacquainted herself with. Her sister let her into their mom's house with no judgement. Eva had always been the problem child and was all too happy to console her perfect sister for her less than perfect night.
Last Chance
Sally slept half the day away having instructed Eva not to let anyone in for any reason. Around 4:00, a commotion made her open her upstairs door. Lucas yelled, "Sally, I wanted to call, but you left your phone. Please, let me explain." Eva said something Sally couldn't make out. Lucas went on, "Sally, whatever Cindy told you is a lie." The door slammed, yet Lucas kept shouting. "Please, Sally. I'm not leaving until we talk. Someone will have to drag me away for obstruction of the peace."
Sally opened the window. "I'll be down in a minute, but for heaven's sake, don't get arrested."
Famous Last Words
They sat on the porch. Sally said, "I'll give you five minutes. This better be good."
"I swear, whatever Cindy told you is a pack of lies. She's been stirring up trouble since we split. I didn't even know she still had a key."
"She called you her husband."
"See? A lie. I can show you the divorce papers."
"She insinuated you had a threesome."
"Oh my God! Please tell me you didn't fall for that bullshit."
"Well, you did say you're always fighting your wild side."
"Not like that. I'd like to show you more of my wild instinct though, when you're as up for it as I am. I meant it when I said I've always had a thing for you. Hell, I'll agree to move to the city just to be with you, and I hate big cities."
"Okay, that was pretty convincing. You wouldn't make a bad lawyer yourself."
"No thanks. A lawyer marrying a lawyer is just too much lawyering in one house."
"Are you proposing the day after we met - well, got reacquainted?"
"I won't rush you, but that would be ideal."
At Last
"Let's just start with a platonic date in a couple of days and go from there."
"I'll take it. I'll take whatever you're willing to give me."
"Let's plan on a nice mix of wild and tame."
"I'm going to kiss you again."
"I would not be averse."
