"Ashes & Embers"

Part I: The Pact Beneath the Moon

By Huda YusufPublished about a year ago 2 min read

In the forgotten edges of the world, where the veil between realms grows thin and the stars hang like secrets, there stood a village bound by silence. Hollowmere, they called it. A place of still winds, old curses, and people who knew better than to stray into the woods after sunset.

But not all obeyed.

Aria was seventeen when she first stepped beyond the tree line, barefoot, her hair tangled from dreams. Grief had gnawed through her chest—her mother lost to a fever no healer could name, her father drowned in debts to a king who’d long since stopped listening. She wanted nothing but an end. Not to life, but to the ache. To the hollowness.

The forest gave her something else.

Under a moon swollen with crimson, Aria lit a candle at the altar of forgotten gods, a place overrun with moss and silence. She didn’t pray. She asked.

“Bring me someone,” she whispered. “Anyone who sees me. Anyone who stays.”

The wind died. The leaves stilled.

And from the shadows, he came.

Tall, cloaked in black flame and bone, with eyes the color of molten gold. His horns were smooth as polished obsidian, his skin the shade of midnight. He knelt before her, not as a monster, but as something ancient—curious, and somehow...gentle.

“You called,” he said, his voice a velvet rasp. “I answered.”

Aria didn’t scream. She didn’t run. Perhaps the grief had burned away her fear, or perhaps some part of her had always known the world was not only what it claimed to be.

“What are you?” she asked.

The creature tilted his head. “A demon,” he said plainly. “Bound now to you, by blood and breath. You asked for someone who sees you. I do.”

And he did.

He saw every crack in her heart, every shadow she’d tucked away. He didn’t flinch from her sorrow. He didn’t offer to take it. He only stood with her, in the silence after.

She gave him a name. Kael.

He told her his true name would turn her bones to glass, so Kael would do.

From that night on, Aria returned to the forest. At first, she asked him questions—what he was, where he came from, why he hadn't taken her soul. He answered little, but he stayed. And in time, they stopped asking. They simply were—two broken things sharing the night.

Their bond grew, quiet and slow. He showed her how to hear the heartbeat of trees, how to find stillness in pain. She showed him how humans mourned, and laughed, and danced under skies they couldn’t control.

But love, between a human and a demon, is never left untouched.

There were others who watched—angels with silver swords and laws older than stone. The balance was shifting, they said. A demon cannot love. A human cannot bind the unholy.

But Kael did love her, though his love was not gentle. It was fire and fury, desperate and vast. And Aria loved him back, though it tore at her soul.

One night, as the stars bled light into the dark, he gave her a choice.

“If you walk away now, I will vanish. You will live, long and ordinary. But if you stay…” His hand brushed her cheek, almost reverent. “You will never be the same. Your heart, your fate—it will be rewritten.”

She looked at him, eyes full of storm.

“I never wanted ordinary,” she said.
