Apples For Bobbin

A short story about an apple loving cat

There once was cat who was known far and wide for his truly bizarre obsession with bright red apples. He couldn't keep away from them no matter how much he tried and nobody ever knew why, except for I. It all began when he was a kitten and boy was he small, no bigger than my mitten. He had been left in a box on the side of the road for no one wanted this stray from whoever's abode. The only thing to keep him company was a bright red apple that glistened and sparkled which gave him the sense that he was never truly alone.

Upon seeing this ordeal, I brought him home with me to share what I could and give him a chance to live with his might for he truly wouldn't give up his fight. After a battle with water and fleas, I gave him a meal and made him a bed for which to rest his head. He took one look and quickly made flight for he wouldn't leave him apple lest it gave him a fright. Seeing the situation I brought the apple in and let him sleep beside it to keep him happy and soothe his sorry soul. After a while I noticed something funny, whenever another apple came into his sight that wasn't bright and sunny, he immediately set upon it and gave it a good fight.

For whatever reason, his apple craze began to spiral out of control. If so much as anything that came into my home looked like an apple, and frenzy would ensue with him beating whatever black and blue. Eventually I begat a name for the little scamp, as he reminded me of an old friend with a similar kind of fight-like attitude. Bobbin welcomed his new name and was very responsive to whenever I called, especially once he learned an apple would be near his dinner plate. Life went on and as he got older, Bobbin soon began to explore the neighborhood more and would bring back all kinds of bizarre items. From gnome heads to oranges and even the occasional golf ball, but one thing was for sure; everything had some form of apple like trait that Bobbin couldn't ignore.

After talking with my neighbors we all began a simple but easy way to control his new pillaging streak. Every morning when we got up to get the morning paper, one of us would leave an apple out for Bobbin to play with. They weren't very expensive back then and they certainly were more fruitful in keeping Bobbins at bay compared to how he was before. Now whenever people are out and looking for a bit of excitement, they can't help but walk by and look for Bobbin for he always has something in store for them that always makes their day. My personal favorite is when Bobbin gets two apples in one day and since he has a hard time figuring out which one to play with, he starts running around in circles until he can't see those apples any more. I did feel bad for him on one certain day, when one of our neighbors decided to move away. They would always hand out treats to Bobbin if he ever came by and would get tossed an apple to keep him from being dry. I never could have asked for a more fun and interesting cat, and our neighborhood would never be the same without him if he ever went away. All of this started with just a box and a cat, and now he lives in a bigger box where apples are forever his playful friends and we are his loving audience.
