The film follows Lang and Van Dyne as they are transported to the Quantum Realm and face Kang the Conqueror.

Background and Development

The idea for a third Ant-Man film was confirmed in November 2019, with director Peyton Reed and actor Paul Rudd returning. In April 2020, Jeff Loveness was hired to write the script for the movie. The movie's development began during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the title and new cast members were announced in December 2020. Principal photography began in July 2021, and the film premiered in Los Angeles on February 6, 2023.

Plot

In Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) are transported to the Quantum Realm along with their family and face Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). Kang is a "time-traveling, multiversal adversary" trapped in the Quantum Realm who needs Pym Particles to get his ship and a device online that would allow him to go anywhere and when in time. Kang is an alternate-timeline variant of the character He Who Remains, the creator of the Time Variance Authority (TVA) introduced in the first season of Loki (2021).

Cast and Characters

The cast of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania includes Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man, a former petty criminal with a suit that allows him to shrink or grow in scale while increasing in strength. Evangeline Lilly plays Hope van Dyne / Wasp, the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne who is handed down a similar suit and the Wasp mantle from her mother. Jonathan Majors plays Kang the Conqueror, the "time-traveling, multiversal adversary" trapped in the Quantum Realm.

Reception

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premiered in Los Angeles on February 6, 2023, and was released worldwide on February 17, 2023. The film received mixed reviews from critics.

Analysis

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the third film in the Ant-Man series and the 31st film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), where Scott Lang helped save the universe from Thanos. The film explores the Quantum Realm and introduces Kang the Conqueror, a villain described as the "supervillain of supervillains" and a top-tier, A-list Avengers villain. The movie also features new characters and cast members, including Kathryn Newton, David Dastmalchian, Katy O'Brian, William Jackson Harper, Bill Murray, Michelle Pfeiffer, Corey Stoll, and Michael Douglas.

The film received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising the movie's humor, action sequences, and performances, while others criticized the pacing, the character development, and the lack of emotional depth.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania explores themes of family, legacy, and the consequences of messing with time and the multiverse. It also sets up the introduction of Kang as a major antagonist in the MCU, with the potential for multiple appearances in future films and shows.

Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film has been a box office success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide as of February 2023. It is the first film in Phase Five of the MCU and sets the stage for several upcoming projects in the franchise.

The film features several returning characters from the previous Ant-Man films, including Scott's best friend Luis (Michael Peña), former criminal associates Dave (T.I.) and Kurt (David Dastmalchian), and FBI agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park). Bill Murray also makes a cameo appearance in the film.
