Portobello Road was one of her favorite places on Earth. The maze of cobblestone streets peppered with tourists promised hidden treasure if you were patient enough to go hunting. The rules were simple. Avoid said tourists at almost all costs. They usually opted for the neat stalls, all the finds deftly organized in the windows, beckoning in more hopeless saps. Suckers.

The real gold was nestled in the haphazard heaps of old tin trays tucked between ivory tusks and costume jewelry. Where chaos ruled was where you would find your pearl. Sometimes literally.

But today, it was a locket. Its chain peeked out from under a pile of books. Her fingers brushed the cold metal, sending a shiver up her spine.

Echoes of a ballroom rang in her ears, and sorrow filled her heart. She unclasped the locket to find two weathered portraits facing each other: a uniformed man, and a woman with eyes that held a century of secrets.

She could feel the faint heartbeat of the past. A soldier's promise to return, and the woman's silent prayers.

The bell above the shop's door jangled, pulling her back to the present. The locket's chain slipped through her fingers as it snapped shut with a click. You never know what you’re going to find on Portobello Road.

This made me so emotional! I wish I had what she had. I'd love to feel the residual emotions of the people who owned the things. Loved your word and story!

Marvelous! we finally have a word to describe this occurrence which is right up my alley! I loved the subtle paranormal feel to this. Excellent entry!

I adore this. Antiquing is one of my favorite things to do, and you’ve described in such lovely prose all the sensations of it—the excitement of treasure hunting as an adult, the rare beauty glimpsed among junk, the physical and extra sensory feelings of holding objects with history greater than mine. The word, the definition, and the storytelling all came together harmoniously.
