The smallest boy next to her had crawled into his brother’s bed. Rolling her eyes to turn on the iris camera, she blinked the image of the two boys, real humanity.
She went to the open window and stepped out onto the ledge, needing freedom from the mediocrity. She breathed peace into the room, soothing the restless. Then she dropped. Free falling before unfurling her expansive wings.
He watched from the shadows of the street below and his world collapsed.
