“Hi,”

Standing at about five-foot-six inches — including her five-inch stiletto tan boots — the stranger smiled a friendly, all-knowing smile.

Under most circumstances, Alaina would be petrified of a stranger in her apartment. However, the woman standing in her living room looked more like her new best friend than an axe murderer. Wearing a high-waist navy pencil skirt and button-up long-sleeved sandy silk blouse, her short brunette hair was cut in an a-line bob, which looked impeccable on her petite frame. Her friendly blue eyes were open wide and looking straight at Alaina. Though shaken, Alaina didn’t flinch. Yet, she didn’t move a step forward.

“Hi,” Alaina responded, frozen in place.

“I’m not here to harm you,” the stranger broke the ice. It must be my lucky day… Alaina listened as the stranger continued, “I want to offer you something.”

“What’s that?…” Alaina had still yet to move. She glanced at the front door to her apartment, which was still unlocked and closer to Alaina than the stranger.

“I want you to work undercover for the United States of Everything government,” the woman explained. “You will be in a special U.S.E. government division called the Waiter Task Force. You will continue your job at A Bold Age. No one, absolutely no one, can know you’ve accepted this position.”

“Who are you? And what are you talking about?” Alaina asked, perplexed and in a bit of shock. “I haven’t accepted any position.”

“Yet,” the woman stated. “The purpose of the W.T.F. division is to befriend the enemy and break down their guard so confessions are made, and criminals are caught, or turn themselves in.”

“So you want me to become friends with criminals and then turn them in?” Alaina clarified.

“Not exactly. You are the law, so how you handle them is up to you.” The woman looked pleased.

“So I can let them go?” Alaina asked.

“Or punish them yourself. You get the point. With your new job, you are the law,” she restated.

Alaina felt queasy, “I don’t even know what to say right now. This is … funny.” Alaina blinked and glanced at the door again.

“You can leave,” the woman said, “But you can’t tell anyone about your new job.”

“What happens if I don’t take the job?” Alaina asked, not sure she wanted to hear the answer, “Are you going to kill me…?”

“Of course not. But, you want the job,” the woman said matter-of-factly. For the first time, the stranger stepped toward Alaina.

Alaina broke her gaze, looking back toward her escape route. She looked at the woman walking toward her. Instead of leaving, Alaina relaxed on the couch, sinking into the cushions.

“You seem real …,” Alaina said, unsure of what to think.

The woman laughed a comfortable laugh, “I am real.”

“You realize I’m caught extremely off-guard right now?” Alaina asked.

“Fair enough. I just wanted to shake your hand,” she said, holding her hands up in a declaration of peace. “Congratulations,” she smiled.

“I haven’t even accepted! Who are you?! What is this?!” Alaina glared at the woman.

“I can save you a lot of time and energy,” the stranger began, “We’ve put a lot of research into this. We’ve been keeping tabs on you over the past three years. We know you’ll say yes. That’s one reason why we chose you.”

“Three years?” Alaina asked, suddenly realizing something odd about this situation.

“Yes, three years. Three years and four months, to be exact.” Three years and four months… What did they have to do with that night? How is this related? Somehow, this is beginning to make sense…

“Did you…? How do I…? Who are you?” Alaina asked.

“All that matters is that I’ll be your new boss,” the stranger said.

“Do I get to think about this?” Alaina was still awe-stricken.

“What do you need to think about? The longer you think, the less time we have to get started,” she responded.

Alaina stretched out on the couch and shut her eyes. Working undercover for the United States of Everything government would be intriguing. This is so odd. How do I even make this decision? And I can’t tell anyone? Is this real? A prank? This is truly an adult decision that I have to make alone. I’m not used to this. If I say no, I’ll probably keep working at A Bold Age, bumming around…trying to figure out what to do with my life…unless she kills me. If I accept, I’ll have a whole new life... What would that be like? I wonder how much they’ll pay me?

Alaina popped up and looked at the woman, who was now sitting on the chair across from her. “How much will I get paid?”

“You will have a personal credit card with no limit to use however you choose. The U.S.E. government will be responsible for all charges. You will only see the bill if, of course, you want to. You will also get a yearly salary of $300,000 to do with as you please and a signing bonus of $30,000, which,” she paused, reaching in her bag, “I have in cash for you right here. And you will have a separate card for W.T.F. expenses.”

“Will I still be able to see my friends and family?” Alaina asked, having a hard time believing what she just heard. Thirty thousand dollar bonus…that’s about what I made all last year. And a credit card with no limit? Is she for real? Let alone a $300,000 salary!

“Yes. All of us lead regular lives with our friends and family. Like I said, you will still keep your job at the restaurant, so they can always see you there. And we can be flexible about where your assignments take you. For example, if you want to visit a sister or friend, we can get you on an assignment near them for a while. Enough criminals are around to keep you busy wherever you’d like to be. However, you must move cautiously because no one can know your position. We’re experts at this, so we can go over all the details on how to cover your tracks. Luckily, you already live alone, which makes this much easier.”

“If I’m working thirty to forty hours at the restaurant and suddenly have all this money, my friends and family are going to be suspicious,” Alaina made a point.

“If your public purchases ever reflect your salary increase, we’ll just make them think you’re very lucky. You’ll play the lottery or go to the boats with your friends,” the woman pointed out, “We have ways to cover your tracks both physically and financially, of course.”

That seems reasonable enough. Apparently, this woman has strings to rig the lottery. And she’s been watching me for three years without my knowing? She’s not the kind of person I want to upset! But do I even have a choice? It may be fun…on some level…working undercover for the U.S.E Government … Do I have a reason to say no? Not really… Do I have a reason to say yes? I’m not sure … Besides the money, it sounds like quite the experience. It just bothers me she walked in here knowing I’d say yes! So controlling.

“I’m not going to do it,” Alaina said matter-of-factly.

“Okay then,” The woman grabbed her bag and walked toward the door. She opened it, walked out, and shut it. Alaina heard the click of the woman’s stiletto boots descending the stairs outside her apartment.

Alaina rushed to the door and flung it open. “Wait!”

The woman stopped with her right hand on the railing and looked at Alaina. “Yes?”

“I’ll do it,” Alaina said. “I just need to sit down again.”

Unfazed by Alaina’s remark, the woman walked back up the stairs and re-entered the apartment, shutting the door behind her. She extended her right hand to Alaina. “My name is Aurelia Parii. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

Feeling as though she just jumped off a waterfall into an unknown body of water, Alaina shook her hand.
