You rose, blooming into lucidity like a newborn. Something about that day was different, you sensed it. Your crimson room shifted again and the only entrance and exit appeared to be the oculus above. “Strange,” you thought.
Moving felt heavier than usual. A feather floated to your lap, the exact same hue as your skin. You sensed yourself and felt extra muscles, no, “Wings!” you thought.
You stood and stretched.
You stared up into the sky, witnessing family and friends taking flight.
It was your turn.

The Countdown
A deafening cheer erupts from the crowd outside Danny’s hotel window in New York City’s Time Square. The sky darkens as a giant, electric-blue ball begins to descend, a harbinger of the New Year’s arrival. Danny’s heart races, his nausea amplified by the rising tide of voices counting down in perfect sync. “Fifty-nine, fifty-eight, fifty-seven-”
