Glittering frozen paradise, surrounded by the harsh reality and beautiful ethereal nature of the elements. Snow-covered houses stand in a row like pristine palaces. It's easy to get caught up in the unfiltered beauty. Until you have to scrape at the windshield of your car and shovel a driveway out of the snow.
That's what Melissa thought, every year. She felt a pang of regret messing up the perfect white blanket, but needs must.
In a funny way, she enjoyed the peacefulness of it. It was chance to enjoy a bit of calm before her shift.It also gave her a chance to spend time with Alex. He had a smile and demeanor that calmed Melissa. They had known each other since Alex moved in two years ago.
During the pandemic...they became friends and spent many evenings over the garden fence and mornings at their doors exchanging gripes, moans and jibes about each other's attempts at banana bread and Zoom mishaps.
There had always been chemistry...but both had been burned badly in the past by relationships. Even when restrictions were no longer in place, Melissa and Alex maintained their electrically-charged relationship with the garden fence between them.
Until that morning.
When Alex stepped out of his house, looking like he was going on an expedition to Antarctica, and caught sight of Melissa, shovelling at snow, her long brown curls standing out against all the white. He knew today would be different.
"Yes" was her reply to his simple question of "Dinner?"

The Ugliest Structure
Mark Twain called the structure I work in, "The ugliest structure in America." I concur. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Chief Place of business isn't the biggest in Washington, D.C., yet its forcing façade causes it to feel as is it. I work for the Workplace of E-Government and Data Innovation. I have a satellite office in the entrails of this monster. Working in this building gives us speedy admittance to both the President and VP on the grounds that they additionally have workplaces here. This entrance might be the reason I'm in this present circumstance, or perhaps it's the task I'm allocated to, or both.

Death is a black hole. Think about it. A black hole is the corpse of a star, something once warm and bright, now come to the end of its life cycle. But some will argue that the cycle of life does not end with death. That death is merely another path we must walk once our bodies expire and our souls ascend. In that moment, when the fuel in the star’s chemical tank hits empty and the shiny matte coat explodes into supernova, the mass left behind – the corpse – becomes a black hole. We understand that, around such a vast cadaver, dimensions work a little differently in death to the way we’re used to in life. For example, light cannot escape the pull of a black hole when it hits the point of no return. That’s where it gets its colour. Space itself is contorted by a black hole. That’s where it gets its funny shape. Even time. Time slows right down the closer you get to it. The closer you get to a black hole. The closer you get to death.
