A Mother's Love

(a story about how far a mother's love can go)

"Woman with Dead Child" - Käthe Kollwitz

A long time ago, on a frosty winter night, there was a mother full of love, looking tenderly at her child who was weakened by illness.

As she sat while her soul lay next to her, an old man in black clothes knocked on the door. The woman welcomed him into her house without knowing that he is none other than the Death.

Because she was constantly sitting next to her baby, the fatigue of three sleepless nights overtook her and she fell asleep only for a few moments. When she woke up, the old man and the child were gone.

She hurried outside where she met a woman in long black clothes who says that she knew where the Death took her child, but she would only tell her if she would give her all of her songs. "I am the Night and I heard your songs bathed in tears"

She did as well, after which she received directions and arrived at a crossroads. There she asked a bush where to go. The bush offered her details only in exchange for a warm hug.

The mother hugged the bush, and its thorns entered her flesh causing her body to gush blood uncontrollably. The bush turned green and blossomed, in the middle of winter. A mother's heart can be so warm.

Continuing on her way, she reached a lake that didn't want to let her cross except in exchange for her eyes, which the lake saw as some precious and shining pearls. The mother cried until her eyes ran into the lake, and he helped her pass.

After crossing the lake, she met an old woman with gray hair who asked for her black and beautiful hair to tell her where to go. Said and done, the mother took the gray hair and ends up in a garden full of flowers, before the Death arrives.

The flowers represented the souls taken by the Death, each of them having its own heart. The mother didn't need eyes to recognize her child. It was enough to listen to his heartbeat.

When the Death arrived, he asked the woman how she get there before him, but she simply answered: "I am a mother".

He wanted to pluck the flower that was actually the mother's baby, but she didn't let him and said she would pluck two other flowers instead.

This thing scared the Death, because he was responsible before God for every flower plucked from the root.

The Death stopped the grieving mother: "You, you are a mother, would you do this to other mothers, so that they feel what you're feeling too now?". He gave her back her eyes and showed her the future of the children she wanted to uproot.

One of them had a blessed future, but the other was struggling with poverty, experiencing only suffering. After which death confessed that one of these is the future of her child.

Unfortunately, the Death couldn't tell the mother which of them is the future of her child, so what was left for the woman to do was to turn to the One who knows everything.

The mother, full of pain, prayed to God saying "Do not listen, Lord, to my prayers when they oppose Your will".

And then, the Death pulled the flower from the root and took it to an unknown place. A place we won't know about until we get to see it with our own eyes, and from which no one can ever escape no matter how hard they try.
