A Journey of Reflection and Resilience

My path towards Fulfilment and Joy

By Abiodun Olubunmi AkinsurojuPublished 3 years ago • 3 min read

Introduction: When I share my occupation with strangers and acquaintances, their responses often brim with delight. Words, laden with meaning and value, possess the power to convey success and accomplishment. Yet, as I stand here, exhausted and worn, the allure of those words no longer holds significance. At 25 kilometers weary, my body falters, and the prestige associated with a supposed triumph means nothing to me anymore. I admit, I once succumbed to the allure of an industry that paraded fashion as an unexpected savior. Reality hit hard. I am a malleable vessel, my worth quantified by productivity, my value measured by swiftness. Time holds no weight, and the essence of taste is reduced to the ability to discern color combinations that generate revenue. We crave beauty, the right kind of beauty. Alluring, yet not promiscuous. Feminine, yet not Marilyn Monroe. Thin, but not hungry. A woman in a window, basking in sunlight with a book and tea while her family enjoys a modest vacation. Cultured, but never arrogant. This job, I need it. I'm grateful for it. Yet, I despise it. It lacks soul and hijacks my dreams, sending them aboard a ferry bound for an iceberg. "So, why not leave?" one might ask. And venture into what? The damage we inflict upon our bodies and souls is directly proportional to the price we are paid for that destruction. In a few weeks, I will turn 44, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't racing against time. Over the past 17 years, I have resorted to every form of escapism, which has carried me through, often providing pleasure. However, there are no more escapes to be found. I am trapped. And sober. Thank God. But damn. Ah, the people I have encountered. Love has blossomed within this industry, diverse forms of love. I have gained a unique set of skills that have overflowed, enriching other facets of my life—my art, my writing (perhaps), my ability to shift perspectives (though I still gravitate towards my trusty Jordans). From something I dread doing every Sunday, I have extracted invaluable experiences. Itinerant jobs, undeniably draining. But let's gain some perspective. I have the freedom to indulge in my passions when time allows. I can relish any cuisine whenever hunger strikes. I adorn myself in quality garments and bestow gifts upon my loved ones. I have matured within this industry, often adopting the mannerisms of others to blend seamlessly into social situations. The skills I lacked in my youth are now sufficient to navigate life, sometimes even thrive. This may not be forever. Only forever endures eternally. For now, however, I must survive using the only means I know. Perhaps my ferry will alter its course, docking in a destination yet unknown even to my dreams. I believe I am merely exhausted. Life without art is akin to death. Yet, here I stand, alive. And blessed. Conclusion: In this profound journey of introspection and resilience, I have come to realize that the pursuit of success defined by conventional measures can be a hollow endeavor. The alluring facade of an industry that promised fulfillment has left me weary and questioning my path. However, within this labyrinth of exhaustion, I have discovered love in its various forms and acquired skills that have permeated other aspects of my life. I am eternally grateful for the opportunities my current occupation provides, yet I yearn for a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment. While the road ahead may still be uncertain, I embrace my weariness and remain open to the possibilities that lie beyond the confines of my current reality. I hold onto the belief that life is a tapestry woven with intricate threads of art, love, and self-discovery. With each passing day, I am reminded that true blessings reside not in societal validation, but in the ability to find solace within my own being. As I continue to navigate the currents of life, I am fueled by the indomitable spirit that whispers, "There is more to come." And so, with every weary step, I forge ahead, holding onto the flickering ember of hope that one day, my journey will lead me to a destination where my dreams and my soul can truly soar
