Max was a large golden retriever well known for his large appetite and large heart as well. Each day he would wake up with the sound of the owner, Sarah, stirring around in the kitchen. Bailey’s breakfast was sizzling in the pan and the smell of bacon was floating all over the kitchen; Max was already waiting for his food, and his tail was going crazy. Once the food had been swallowed, he would hurry outside to the backyard which he enjoyed chasing the squirrels and then get back and play with Sarah.
Of all the days, one fine Sunday afternoon when they were at a local park, Max saw a little girl crying on a swing. Even though he could not speak, his feelings told him that she needed him; he walked over and lightly touched the back of her hand with his snout. Astounded, she glanced at the ground and smiled via crying. Max’s amiable personality looked to have some kind of a medication effect on her because the moment he was there, she appeared to be much happier. They played together until her mother arrived; she thanked Sarah for coming with such a nice dog.
During the evening when he came back home, he was exhausted, but satisfied. He lay down by the feet of Sarah and just watched her read a book aware that he had brought a moment of joy into someone’s day. It was at that moment Max came to understand that being a dog meant running after squirrels or any treat, but it was about sharing happiness with all people you meet.
