Emma sat alone in her room, her heart heavy with sadness. It was her birthday, but there were no celebrations, no laughter, and no gifts. Her parents had been working late for weeks, leaving her to spend her special day by herself. She understood they had responsibilities, but it didn't make the ache in her heart any less painful.

As the day wore on, Emma couldn't shake the feeling of being forgotten. She thought about her previous birthdays, filled with joy and excitement as her family and friends gathered to celebrate her. But this year, it seemed like everyone had forgotten about her.

Feeling the weight of her loneliness, Emma decided to take a walk in the nearby park. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow on the world around her. As she strolled along the familiar path, she noticed a small, weathered bench nestled beneath a towering oak tree.

Emma sat down and let out a heavy sigh, her eyes drawn to the ground. She began to wonder if her birthday truly mattered to anyone. Just as she was about to give in to despair, a tiny, elderly woman with kind eyes and a gentle smile appeared beside her.

"Is something troubling you, dear?" the woman asked, her voice soft and comforting.

Emma looked up, surprised to see someone paying attention to her. "It's my birthday, but it feels like no one remembers," she confessed, her voice tinged with sadness.

The old woman nodded knowingly. "Sometimes, we believe that others have forgotten us, but it may not always be true. Sometimes, they just need a little reminder."

Emma's curiosity was piqued. "How can I remind them?" she asked, her voice filled with hope.

The woman reached into the pocket of her coat and pulled out a small, shimmering candle. "Make a wish, my dear, and carry this candle with you. Light it tonight, and let your heart's desire guide the flame."

Emma took the candle gratefully, feeling a spark of anticipation deep within her. She thanked the old woman and watched as she disappeared into the fading light.

That night, Emma lit the candle in her room, the flame flickering and casting a warm glow. She closed her eyes and made a heartfelt wish, sending her love and longing out into the universe. The candle danced with newfound energy as if it had a life of its own.

Suddenly, a knock at the door interrupted Emma's moment of reflection. She hurriedly blew out the candle, tucking it safely away, and opened the door. To her astonishment, she was greeted by her parents, holding a beautiful cake adorned with flickering candles.

"Happy birthday, Emma!" they exclaimed, their eyes filled with regret. "We're so sorry we couldn't be there for you earlier. We didn't forget; we were just caught up with work. We realized our mistake and wanted to make it up to you."

Tears of joy welled up in Emma's eyes as she hugged her parents tightly. At that moment, she understood the old woman's words - sometimes, people need a reminder.

As Emma blew out the candles on her cake, she felt a sense of contentment and love surround her. She realized that even though her birthday hadn't gone as planned, the power of a single wish and the love of her family could mend the sadness that had weighed her down.

From that day forward, Emma carried the shimmering candle with her as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always hope and the possibility of finding joy. And each year on her birthday, she would light the candle once more, sending her wishes out into the universe, knowing that she would never be forgotten again.
