Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow

It’s been a while since Alchemy of Souls season 1 ended, but fans cannot seem to get over this amazing drama. Dramas come and go, but Alchemy of Souls is here to stay with us, it will be remembered for the awesome casting, the immense chemistry shared by the female and male lead, the mind-bending fight scenes, the amusing character of our dear Mu deok, the smoldering chemistry between our prince and Jang Uk, amongst others. The drama was home to most of us fans, it was an escape into the fictional world of the mages with mystical powers and the four seasons.

While the wait for the premiere of Alchemy of Souls Season 2 titled Light and Shadow is almost unbearable (It’s unbearable for me) let us amuse ourselves by going over some questions we need answers to in Light and Shadow.

1) The Connection between Jin Bu Yeon and Naksu

At the beginning of the drama, fans got to witness the alchemy of souls between Mu deok (Jin Bu Yeon) and the great assassin Naksu. Initially, Naksu did not select Mu deok to shift soul with her because she was blind but one way or the other, she ended up in Mu deok’s body. The mystery behind why she ended up in Mu deok’s body still remains unsolved because it couldn’t have been just a coincidence that a great soul like Naksu ended up sharing a body with another great soul.

After fans got to know that Mu deok is Jin Bu Yeon, (the long-lost daughter of Lady Jin, leader of Jinyowon), who is said to possess amazing powers as a priestess, fans began theorizing that Jin Bu Yeon might have picked Naksu and trapped her soul in her body. In Episode 16 of Alchemy of Souls, Jin Cho-Yeon in a conversation with Mu deok revealed that a powerful priestess can control people’s souls and trap them to become helpless. She further revealed that if the priestess traps the power of the soul even the most powerful mages are helpless. This episode proves the theories to be true and we also got to know why Naksu was unable to use her powers.

Now, with the mystery of how Naksu ended in Mu deok’s body solved, another question that comes to mind, is why Jin Bu Yeon chose Naksu, why Naksu? In Alchemy of Souls Episode 18, Naksu meets Jin BuYeon in the Ice stone. Jin Bu Yeon explains that the ice stone is not meant to be possessed, she also states that ‘’We did not lose the Ice Stone this time’’ when talking to Naksu. Another instance of a possible connection was when Master Lee stated that he could not find any malice between Mu deok’s body and Naksu’s soul. So, what exactly is the connection between Naksu and Jin Bo Yeon?

2) Who is Jang Uk’s, true love?

One of the suspense that has been smoldering fans is who Jank Uk will end up with between Naksu and Jin Bu Yeon/Mu deok. While actress Jung so-min has not been confirmed for season 2, fans are desperately imploring for her return to the drama. The return of actress Jung so min as Jin Bu Yeon or Mu deok is likely to create chaos for Jang Uk who will finally have to decide who fell in love with between Naksu his master and Jin Bu Yeon/ Mudeok, whose face he longs to see.

Personally, my stakes are on Naksu who has been the main lead of the drama right from season 1 regardless of the actress who played the role. While many have developed an instant connection to the actress who acted as Mu deok, it is about time we come to terms with the fact that Mu deok was a body that housed the soul of Naksu. Right from when Jang Uk met Mu deok he was only interested in the great assassin who he desperately wanted as his master. Whoever he picks, it will be interesting to find out how the love story plays out. Let me know who you think Jang Uk fell in love with in the comment section and Why?

3) Who rescued Mu deok/Bu Yeon’s body in the Alchemy of Souls finale?

It was disheartening to see Naksu's wild form and Mu deok’s body petrified at the finale of the drama. Towards the end of the season, theories suggest that Mu deok’s body housed both Naksu’s soul and Jin Bu Yeon’s soul, with Jin Bu Yeon’s soul being the dormant one of the two. Nevertheless, we witnessed Jin Bu Yeon's incredible powers despite her dormant soul, she used her amazing power to save Naksu from the soul shifter in Cheonbugwan in Episode 12 of Alchemy of Souls, and Episode 18 also gave us a preview of her control over the Ice stone.

With the powers she possesses it is puzzling that she couldn’t save Naksu from Jin Mu’s control at the finale of the season. Without Jin Bu Yeon’s power to save her from Jin Mu, Naksu’s soul ran wild and Mu deok’s body became petrified. Alchemy of Souls ended with Naksu deciding to end the agony by falling into the lake but the finale teases that two unknown women rescued her body. Fans believe that the two women were Lady Jin’s maids and we look forward to how Alchemy of Souls season 2 will bring back Jin Bu Yeon and Naksu.

4) Jang Uk’s rebirth thanks to the power of the Ice Stone

The Alchemy of Souls finale started with the mind-bending romance between Jang Uk and Mu deok but fans were not prepared for the eventual death that hit us right in the face just when we thought everything was going to be fine. Jang Uk got killed that too, in the hands of our dear Naksu/Mu deok. Of course, his death was foretold by Master Lee in Episode 16 of Alchemy of Souls season 1 but that did not prepare us for the tragic death Jang Uk faced at the hands of his lover.

The Hong sisters dealt fans with a thrilling yet haunting blow as we witnessed the rebirth of the King Star, Jang Uk. The finale of Alchemy of Souls showed the presence of powerful mages as they witnessed the cremating of Jang Uk’s body who came back to life with the power of the Ice Stone.

The short teaser of Alchemy of Souls Shadow and Light teases fans with a different Jang Uk who is more skillful, confident, and perhaps vengeful. This new shade of Jang Uk is definitely something to look forward to in Season 2. With his rebirth thanks to the Ice Stone, is it safe to say that Jang Uk has reached the Hwansu level like Master Lee and has attained immortality?

5) The mystery behind the blood worm in Seo Yul’s body

The fake Jin Bu Yeon, So-I who fell in love with Seo Yul after he saved her from goons might have done more harm than good to our dear Seo Yul. To save Seo Yul who incurred some life-threatening injuries after his fight with a soul shifter, So-I left a blood worm in his chest. It can be recalled that the bloodworm was gotten through sorcery to give So-I the powers possessed by the Jin family.

In Episode 15 Alchemy of Souls, through Jin Mu’s internal monologue we got to know he has full control over whoever has the bloodworm. If he does not use sorcery to keep the worm alive, the worm will eat whoever possesses it from the inside. Has Seo Yul fallen under the control of Jin Mu? And will the pills given by So-I help Seo Yul alleviate the pain? Either way, it will be interesting to see how the bloodworm affects Seo Yul’s character in Alchemy of Souls Season 2.
