Writing prompts for spooky season

October is right around the corner, and what better month to inspire creativity and story? For this year, I decided to create daily writing prompts for the month for inspiration to exercise the writing brain. To have fun with putting down whatever comes through the pen—or if a sudden urge comes along, a paintbrush.

Whether it's turning the prompts into a creepy dark tale perfect for Halloween or a comedy between powerful myths with a lesson weaved within is completely up to how the mind interprets the words. There are many paths, strings, and cobbled streets to follow. Or watch as you may observe the story stalk or slither, sitting—waiting and watching for your footsteps.

Will it be one that lingers in the thick twisting shadows or the one that stands tall and shines brightly under the ominous sky? Which story shall it be?

Hmm, let's see...

1. There is a fallen angel on the side of the road

On a rainy night, much like most nights in the small town nestled between grey waters and unending spiked trees, Michael drove down a thin road. Which was the main road, but one couldn't tell from the look of it. Or the feel of it as a bump that looked like nothing would somehow teach the driver how to levitate in their seat, being stopped only by the car roof—but that is a personal pet peeve, and Michael usually avoided that bump.

As he was stuffing his face with a large Honeybun, Michael noticed something glowing in the distance. It was much too low to be any traffic light, and the color of it, a pale, shimmering white, was odd. He couldn't think of what could be making this light, so he slowed down and waited to see if it was a car driving from the opposite direction.

Though as minutes went by, no cars had passed, and the light started to dim. Michael was so interested in the light in front of him that he forgot to take any more bites of the sweet treat that he was holding by his lips. And why shouldn't he be enthralled by the occurrence? He has no interesting stories to tell in a life filled with very expected things. Nothing to make him wonder or play out memories. Maybe this was the moment.

The word "aliens" repeated in his mind a few times. He wouldn't mind seeing something like that...and technically, he wasn't that far off on the idea.

Another minute or so passed, and Michael stopped the car. The light was gone. In its place was a body in a white robe lying on the street, the face covered by dark hair, wet from the rain. But what really caught Michael's attention was the sprawled-out white wings.

"Good God, an angel?" Michael whispered to himself.

The body twitched.

Michael put down the Honeybun, which he regretted later, and watched. Maybe he would be blessed? Or maybe the creature would bestow great powers, or now he was part of a grand—pfft—journey with a whirlwind romance—HAHA—one second, please...okay, I'm good.

Michael daydreamed as he watched the body, waiting for it to come to. Let's say seven minutes passed before the body tried to sit up, though it might have been longer. And it was then that Michael noticed something quite odd about the wings.

"You're kidding," Michael said, rolling his eyes.

The wings were attached to the body with flimsy metal wiring. As it tried to stand like a newborn learning to walk, one of its wings hung sideways.

The End. For now. This was my little quick writing example for the first prompt.

So, look through the prompts if you'd like and start outlining or daydreaming of the possibilities that can come from a single sentence.

Below are the 31 writing prompts for the spooky season. I hope it gives you ideas to have fun with—or to inspire a much larger story.
