Every day at noon, they gathered us outside in the courtyard, rain, or shine.
Today the wind ripped at my dress causing goosebumps to crawl all over my skin. Mary had a fever. Samuel had tears running down his puffy freckled face.
A few children laughed; the ones that felt fine.
The blooming roses cast a stark brightness against the dull grey sky. We formed our daily circle. Today I held Mary and Johnathan’s clammy hands. Today I felt death whisper in my ear.
We began to sing.
“Ring around the Rosie….”
