Today, You Turned One

Dear Doyle

By Ji Hye HongPublished about a year ago • 3 min read

Doyle, today you turned one.

There wasn’t a big party, or a fancy cake, but my heart was full of you all day long. Maybe that’s why these quiet milestones feel even more moving. I spent most of today thinking about the day you were born—your small, warm body, soft cheeks, barely able to open your eyes, falling asleep in my arms. Every gentle breath you took felt like a miracle.

I thought having a third baby would feel easier. I’d been through it twice already, so I assumed I’d be more confident. But when you arrived, I felt more nervous, more careful. With your older brothers running around, calling for me even while you napped, and work and house chores piling up, I worried—could I give you the same love, the same space in my heart? But you quietly and naturally slipped into our lives. You entered a life that felt packed with no room to spare, and somehow, you made all of our hearts expand. We found space, time, and love for you that we didn’t even know we had.

You were a bit sensitive from the beginning, with your atopic skin. It itched and woke you up at night, and you cried often. I would lie next to you, pat your back softly, hum quietly, and whisper silent prayers—hoping you’d feel better, hoping for peace. I wished I could take the discomfort from you. But in the middle of those exhausting nights, you would sometimes look up at me and smile. That small smile brought tears to my eyes and reminded me to hold on. Those little moments carried me through.

Even today, your quiet strength amazed me. Your brother Eden had friends over, and the house was loud and wild. But you just sat and watched. You didn’t cry, you didn’t fuss. You took it all in with calm eyes. Now and then, you crawled over to me, reached for my arm, and when our eyes met, you smiled. Those brief moments warmed my heart in the deepest way. You have a quiet power—the kind that fills a room without making a sound.

This past year, watching you grow has brought me more joy than I can describe. Your first smile, the sound of your first giggle, the surprised look on your face the first time you rolled over, the little frown when you tasted baby food, the sparkle in your eyes when you heard your brothers' voices. Each day has been small but special. And I feel lucky to have shared every one of those moments with you.

Being the third child means growing up a little differently. You don’t get as much one-on-one time, and you’re used to sharing from the start. But maybe that’s why the time I spend with you feels even more precious. I worry less now, and I watch you more closely. I try less to be perfect, and more to simply be present. My time with you makes me stronger in a quieter, steadier way.

You probably won’t remember this year. But that’s okay—because I will. I’ll remember the weight of you sleeping on my chest, the warm scent of your hair after a bath, your tiny hand wrapped around my finger. You didn’t say a word, but I felt your love every single day.

Doyle, you are such a gift to our family. Your brothers have grown softer because of you. Dad and I have become gentler, too. You feel like an extra heartbeat in our home—quiet but powerful.

And there’s something I need you to know: You don’t have to always be calm, or sweet, or patient. You can cry, throw tantrums, get frustrated. You are worthy of love just as you are. Dad and I are here to see you, to love you, just the way you are.

I want to be there for every birthday you’ll have. I want to see what kind of cake you’ll choose at five, what stories you’ll tell at nine, who you’ll become at sixteen. I hope we keep blowing out candles together, making wishes, hugging tight, and building memories year after year.

So today, on your very first birthday, I want to say this:

Thank you. Thank you for coming to us. Thank you for your gentleness, your strength, your warmth. Thank you for making me a mother all over again—in a slower, deeper way.

Happy birthday, Doyle. Just by being here, you’ve made our lives so much warmer. I love you.

Always loving you,

Mom
