literature
Families and literature go hand in hand; fictional families to entertain, reflect and inspire.
The Rebel Belle
Adelaide felt like her arms were about to fall off. She had been standing on the platform in the boutique for over an hour. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold her arms out from her sides as the seamstress flitted around her, tucking the dress, sticking pins here and there. Finally, she put one final pin in place and pronounced herself satisfied. Adelaide looked at the mirror, staring at her reflection in the full-length white gown. The sweetheart neckline was enhanced with beading and lace while the pins held it firmly against her body down to her waist, where the dress expanded into a ball gown that flowed down to her feet. She hated it.

Remembering Old World California
Most people living in the New World try their best to forget the world that existed before the Catastrophe, especially the wealthy, who’d only made efforts to spare themselves, while disregarding the rest of the population. Some people, however, still do all they can to remember.

The faster I run the closer the man in black gets. I run faster, breathing heavily, desperately trying to escape him. I’m trying so hard not to trip as I run and keep an eye on his distance. I look down and at the last moment see a huge piece of metal sticking out of the road. Bam.

The house was littered with discarded trinkets, forgotten clothes, and left-behind household items. Things that once mattered. What his wife took were the photographs. Albums. Frames. They were meticulously removed, the dust just starting to settle where they once were.
The Escape
Hello my name is Linda, I am 35 years old. I am a domestic abuse survivor that recently got out of a bad abusive marriage and I had to move across the country with my children to get away. My mother and I never saw eye to eye my whole life, so I hardly ever talked to her. I reached out to her when I saw the opportunity to leave my marriage, and save my children and I but as usual she came off cruel and insensitive. It was always my fault as to why I was in my situation in the first place. So again I was on my own as I always had been my whole life.
Crazy Auntie V
I had been having a very bad week, month, year--ok, decade--as demonstrated by my current abode, a one-room, rent-by-the-week "apartment" converted from a 1930s motel in this dying small town. The town boasted two convenience stores, a school (consolidated) and six churches in a two-mile radius. I always wondered why, with so many devout Christians, the parking lot outside my door was alive with druggies and hookers all hours of the night.

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as smelling your dinner being prepared and cooked in the kitchen when you’re so desperately hungry you would eat anything put in front of you, only to have it placed on your lap still steaming from the oven. In this case it was a plate of shepherd’s pie with peas and broccoli on the side with an enormous Yorkshire pudding. The smell of freshly cooked lamb mince, Lea & Perrin’s and gravy filled my nostrils.
