Is this your first?
It’s not even been 24 hours since the birth of my son. I shuffle down the corridor, holding my stomach as I imagine the horror of my c-section stitches busting open. I can’t carry anything, not even my newborn baby. So his dad and my sister are there to help. As I exit the postnatal ward after being coerced to leave my bed prematurely, I pass by a midwife who was with me during my labour. She congratulates me and then continues to comment with what I can only assume is some sort of sick joke. “I’ll see you again soon,” she says. I’m so shocked I almost drop to the floor! I tell her that I won’t be doing that again, but she laughs and says, “They all say that, but you’ll be back here in a year I guarantee it!” I can’t help but feel instantly upset by her comment. I guess it’s because I feel like she’s generalising me and I’ve never been one to want to be put into a societal box. I didn’t respond, but at that moment I’m completely unaware of how many more times I would hear comments like this for weeks, months and possibly years to come.

The Morning Guest
The alarm rang its incessant tone until she half-rolled to shut it off. She rubbed an eye, checking the time on her smartwatch with the other as a sliver of light came in through the slightly parted curtains. Sighing, she swung her legs off the side of the bed as she flung the covers to one side. Mentally going over what she needed to accomplish that day, she opened the closet door, turned on the light, and grabbed a pair of pants, a shirt, a zip-up hoodie, socks, and sneakers. In the quiet, she heard another door open and close. She stopped moving, fingers in an awkward position as she tied her shoes. Only she should be up. Glancing up, she eyed her bedroom door, which was ajar as the cat needed free reign in her room, or she’d never sleep. Her eyebrows came together in concentration, her ears listening hard as her eyes shifted left to right and back. Hearing only quiet, she finished what she’d been doing, stood, and flicked the switch, turning off the light.

Support looks different depending on the day
I got my first paid subscriber this weekend. It was my dad, for those of you that were wondering. But with that subscription, a cascade of thoughts, and outright epiphanies sauntered in, starting with how cool it was to open my email and see that I had a paid subscription when I had just posted my first piece. Now, I did NOT know who it was at first, and I just thought, wow, man, my writing career is going to soar if I already have fans. And when I saw it was my dad, I thought, oh man, of all the fans, he might be my biggest. And then my mom subscribed, and I thought, wow, I have two biggest fans. And this is when the emotion kicked in. (My husband might be my biggest fan of them all, but that is a different story because today we are talking about parents.)

**The Family Tree of Love** In a quaint little town nestled between rolling hills and lush green forests, there stood a charming cottage that belonged to the Hartley family.
