Ship on the horizon

Lily held on tight to the ships wheel while looking over the bow of the ship. She looked towards the horizon and saw something. She didn’t know what it was, it was too far away. Lily steered her ship closer and closer then she saw it, the ship on the horizon. She wondered what kind of ship it was, friend or foe. Lily grabbed her spyglass to try to get a closer look at the ships flags, she didn’t see any. That was odd she thought, every ship she has come across had flags. Playing it safe she decided to turn away from the ship.

“Marty, Smiley to your positions!” She shouted to her crew.

“Aye Captain!” They replied in unison.

The crew members ran to port side and gathered the ropes to the main sail. When demanded they would pull the lead ropes and turn the ship around.

“Ready on your command, Captain!”

Lily looked ahead a saw the rocks; if she hit any of them her ship would be destroyed. She had to think quick to avoid the rocks and to avoid attention of the other ship.

“Get ready, pull hard and fast”, she said while adjusting the wheel, “NOW”, she screamed and turned the wheel fast. Marty and Smiley did as instructed and soon the ship turned around and headed back towards the cove.

“Good job mates should be smooth sailing now. Hopefully that other ship didn’t notice us.” Lily said.

“Who did you think they were?” Marty asked.

“Pirates maybe or they might have been some new friends.” Smiley stated.

“Never mind that, let’s head toward the cove and see what we can find.” Lily said.

Moments later they arrived at the cove, which wasn’t exactly a cove but more like a cave. This cave was rumored to have a hefty treasure; one Lily has been trying to find for a long time. They steered the ship over along the side of the cave entrance and dropped the anchor. Lily instructed her crew members to get the longboat. She looked up and in the distance she saw the ship from the horizon, it followed them.

“Alright we have company so lets make this fast. Get a layout and try to find that treasure or any clues to where it might be”, Lily said lowering the longboat into the water.

They paddled the boat into the cave and climbed out once they reach a ledge leading to a pathway. Lily lifted her lantern high trying to get a better look around. Although it was daylight outside the inside of the cave was a little dark.

“Look over here Captain,” Smiley shouted and pointed to a drawing on the wall.

“What is that?” Marty asked.

“Looks like an upside down sun, or moon.” Smiley guessed.

“How can it be upside down? The sun and moon or circles, they look the same any way.”

“I was just answering your question, if you know what it is why did you ask?”

“I don’t know what it is, but I do know it’s not an upside down sun.”

“Both of you cut it out. Look closely. There are some shapes in a pattern and the pattern leads to this wall over here then splits off. If we follow the right pattern it should lead us to the treasure.”

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Sounded off in the distance, was it canon fire or something else? Lily ran to the ledge and peered out the opening of the cave, the skies were clear so it must be the other ship coming closer.

“We need to hurry,” Lily said running back to the shapes on the wall, “Marty take the circles, Smiley the squares. Don’t get lost, holler if you need help or find it. Meet back here as soon as you can.”

With that they all ran off into different directions. Marty’s path came to a dead end as well as Lily’s. Smiley’s didn’t though, it split off into two other paths. Deciding to keep following the squares, Smiley turned right.

Lily and Marty came back to the ledge and waited for a sign from Smiley. Lily looked out again to see if the other ship left or if it was getting closer. Then she heard Smiley scream.

“Captain! Captain! I found it!” Smiley shouted.

Marty ran towards Smiley, Lily looked out one last time to see where the ship was calculating how long they had before it was on them.

Down the cave path Lily caught up with Marty and Smiley. A chest sat in the middle of the room with gems spiraled around it. They found it at last, Lily was so happy. They ran to the chest and opened it and it was filled with treasure.

“Come on let’s load it up and get out of here.”

“Aye Captain”, Marty and Smiley said.

Smiley and Marty grabbed the chest and hauled it out of the cave onto the long boat while Lily stood watch. Once loaded they paddled to their ship and heaved the chest aboard. Lily took the chest to the treasure room and started pulling up the anchor. Smiley and Marty went to their posts and started untying the sail.

BOOM!

The whole ship shook and Lily whipped her head around to see the other ship gaining on them.

“We have to act fast! Smiley untie the rest of the ropes! Marty finish the main sail!” She shouted and ran up to the helm to take the wheel.

“They don’t seem to be firing directly at us, must be warning shots.” Marty said.

“Ok we need to….”

“Lily its time to get out sweetheart.”

“But Mom, I’m still playing”

“The water is turning cold, you can play pirate ship again tomorrow at bath time.”

“Uh, ok, but it was getting to the good part.”
