Me and my 4th born.

Hey Parents, it’s me. Who? Me—just another mom trying to find the balance of doing this thing called “parenting” to the best of my ability. Therein lies my first problem, because even my best ability is no good. So here’s your parenting pep talks to get you through TODAY.

Pep #1: It’s ok to recognize that your “best” ability at parenting is probably pretty shabby. Just like anything else, you can read all the books and try to learn all the tricks, but until you are walking it out and actually doing this thing—you’re not really at your best. Your ability is getting better everyday you wake up and remember “I want to be the best parent I can be!” We BECOME better! So Rest in that. You are not at your best YET, but you are on your way. So GO! Be on your way at being the best parent you can be.

Pep #2: Being the best parent is a process just like most everything else in life. You won’t get there overnight, but if that’s your goal you will get closer and closer to that BEST everyday—even on your worst days. Yes—that’s right! Even your worst parenting moments make you a better parent. In fact, they probably make you an even better parent than those “rock star” parenting moments. Because we have a tendency to learn more from our failures than our moments of success. Our worst parenting moments can become our biggest help to becoming the best parent we can be! So, when you’re feeling like you epically failed as a parent— embrace it and know that in that moment you just got three steps closer to being the best parent you can be! Write down what it taught you and make a mental note of what you want to do differently the next time around.

Pep #3: Don’t get me wrong, those “Rock Star” parenting moments are super important too! They remind you that YOU are on your way. They show you just how far you’ve come. They nudge you to know that “YOU GOT THIS”. THAT YOU CAN DO THIS! So, don’t forget to celebrate those rock star moments and relish in those feelings of joy, success, accomplishment, overcoming, breakthrough, and winning... because YOU DID DO IT! Way to go mom! Way to go Dad! You are a great parent because you “WANT” to be, and you’ve been going after that. Check it out—you’re one step closer to being the best parent you can be! Keep it up. Write down those wins, take pictures and note just how beautiful, exciting, and great becoming a better parent feels!

Pep #4: Don’t forget being the best parent YOU can be is KEY. You are uniquely created. In the words of Dr. Seuss, Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” Sure you can learn from other parents... we all do! But even what you learn—YOU still make work for you and your kiddoes. There is no cookie cutter parenting approach. There are only parenting principles. So don’t compare yourself to other parents, don’t try to be them. You will never be YOUR best trying to be someone else’s best. Love YOURSELF, learn the principles of good parenting then apply them the best way YOU Can.

Sometimes we just have to give ourselves the little pep talks. Believe me; I know how much it keeps me (a mother of five) from drowning in my own self-pressures, much less the weight the world adds to me. So listen to the Pep Talks, and tell yourself today— “I am getting better and that’s enough.”
