Our Glamping Tent

‘Glamping is likely to satisfy any city slicker seeking a little refuge in nature — without foregoing any of life’s luxuries’ (quote from Lexico).

Wow! So we’ve just had our first Glamping experience. For those who don’t know what Glamping is, it stands for ‘Glamorous Camping’ and is a luxury form of camping. Move over camping and hello beautiful spacious tent with super comfortable beds with fresh linen, an eco-friendly toilet, functional kitchen and freshly brewed coffee.

As a family group of 9, we wanted to have a countryside break and get away from the hustle and bustle of living in a busy city. We’ve never been away with our two pugs, ‘Salt’ and ‘Pepper’, as most Airbnb units don’t allow for pets, so this Glamping trip was the perfect solution.

We went to Horsely Hale farm based in Ely in Cambridgeshire (England, UK). Upon reaching, we were greeted by super friendly staff on-site, who showed us to our Glamping tent. My pugettes and toddler were so happy as there were open green fields, so plenty of space to run around, shout and bark! Additional perks were the docile Alpacas, free-range chickens and lake containing the biggest and fearless Carp fish.

Living Room

King Size Bedroom

Our tent and private space were very comfortable. We had an allocated outdoor fire/bonfire area outside our tent with plenty of chopped up firewood. We had our own BBQ set with fresh coal. Our tent contained two bunk bedrooms, one king-size bedroom, one double bedroom and a sofa bed with shared eco-toilet and shower facilities (with hot water), a functional kitchen, living room with a massive dining table and gas heater. The most endearing find was a children’s playroom hidden under the double bedroom. As an adult, you have to crawl in, but perfect for small children.

Now don’t expect great WIFI — they’ve kept it quite bare, so the focus is on nature and doing non-internet related activities with the family. For instance, playing board games and cards or just reading a good book! We did have electricity — every room had its lights, and we had two electric plug terminals. I even managed to get a work zoom call in that I couldn’t reschedule, as the Glamping operators could hotspot me with a mobile device.

I would recommend giving Glamping a try and getting back in touch with nature!

TOP 5 TIPS FOR GLAMPING BEGINNERS!

1) Do your research and book a Glamping site you and your family would like to spend time in, as all locations are a bit different. This includes looking at past reviews and also what family activities are available. For example, fruit picking, local arts and crafts, animal visits, biking etc

2) Try it for 1–2 nights before committing to a more extended stay so that you can ensure you and your family would be able to spend a more extended period there.

3) Book ahead of time as weekends and school holiday periods will be booked up!

4) Talk to the Glamping operators about what you need to bring. We brought our food and supplies for a BBQ as a freezer fridge was available in our kitchen. Some Glamping sites may provide breakfast and high tea (very posh!)

5) Make sure you can bring your family pet if this applies to you. We could bring our pugs who loved their first glamping experience. However, we still had to put them on a leash outside of our immediate compound area as there were lots of free-range chickens running around.
