Justine Gets Dethroned

Enter Baby Brother

Once upon a time there lived a girl named Justine who was the queen of a land called Salmon Fry Lane. All six houses were under her reign and she loved to survey her domain. She would stoll down the street with her princess crown and wave her scepter all around. Mom and Dad followed close behind, wishing they could tell her what was on their mind. Justine would soon have a younger brother and she'd have to make some room on her throne soon. She would have to get used to sharing her silver spoon. After coming home from the grocery store, her mother couldn't wait anymore and sat little Jessica down to explain to her that there would be a new sheriff in town.

"Justine" her mommy said, "There is something we need to tell you. I'm going to have a baby soon and the baby will be your little brother".

"A little brother?" she pictured a Jester who would lead her court in laughter at her jokes, who would roll out the red carpet for her whenever she entered a room. "Excellent!"

"Do you have any questions about what I told you honey?"

"No, I don't think so!"

"Alrighty then!" Mom said and she started putting her groceries away.

Justine then went up to her room and started imagining who her little brother would be and more importantly what he could do for her. He could hold her hand mirror while she put on her makeup. He could take the dog on a walk when she was too tired. He could clean her dishes after dinner. He could blow her nails dry after she painted them. He could watch movies with her when mom and Dad were busy with work. They could play outside or monopoly indoors.

Then a terrible awful yucky thought crossed her mind. Instead of him doing things for her, she would most likely have to do everything for him because he'd be a little baby! An even grosser thought followed that one. Babies are cute! They're down right adorable! Suddenly, she didn't feel like anyone would care about her once baby brother arrived. And that made her feel sad. Sad and sleepy.

"Justine! Dinner is ready! her Dad called from downstairs. Wiping her drool off of the side of her face she had a few seconds where she didnt quite remember what had made her feel sad, and then it all came crashing down on her. "Dumb baby brother" she muttered stomping down stairs.

Mom made spaghetti, great the second time this week she thought.

"How was school today, Justine?" Mom asked, passing her the basket of bread. Justine shrugged and passed the basket to her dad. Exchanging looks, Mom and Dad could tell there was something going on.

"Any word on the school play? I haven't heard much about your audition!" Dad tried.

"I didn't get Amelia Earhart. But I am playing Eleanor Roosevelt"

"Well that's exciting! Congratulations sweetheart! " Mom replied.

"You know what's not exciting? Having a baby brother!" she cried, leaping up from the table and running into the living room.

"I thought you said she took it well!" she heard Dad say.

"Well she seemed to a few hours ago!" she heard Mom answer.

By the time her parents had entered the living room, Justine had gotten a hold of her tears but her eyes were still puffy and red.

"Sweetie, I'm so sorry that you're feeling bad. Will you please tell us what's on your mind?"

"At first I was really excited to have a little brother. But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like you would love the baby more than you would love me."

"Thats not true!" Mom and Dad said at the same time, which was a little funny and made Justine smile a bit.

"This is big news and it's okay to feel what you're feeling, Justine. Please know that you will never be loved less. Things will be different once the baby comes, but we will all be just fine, I promise." Dad said.

"That's exactly right! Your Dad and I love you very much and we will love this baby very much. We'll all just need to make some room for him, okay? I'm talking about in our home and in here." Mom said, touching the place where her heart is.

"Okay!" Justine agreed.

A big family hug was in order.

"It'll be nice to have someone to do my chores." Justine sighed happily as she made her way back into the kitchen.

"Justine thats-"

"Honey, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I'm a hungry lady, move aside."

THE END.
