Need a break from the endless clamour in George Town? Visit Penang Island. Hundreds of tourists hike Penang Hill in search of adventure, quiet time, and nature. This is one of the must-visit places for anyone visiting George Town. With an elevation of 833 metres, this rugged outcrop offers you beautiful views of the area, balmy temperatures, and the thrill of being deep inside a rainforest.

Where is Penang Hill located?

Located about 40 minutes from Sky Residence Prai, Penang Hill is located on Penang Island. The hill is found 6 kilometres from George Town. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions, which means that you can find a plethora of accommodation options close by. For instance, if you are looking at Bukit Mertajam, apartments are at the top of the list of accommodation options available to you.

What is special about Penang Hill?

Its steep elevation offering gorgeous, mist-soaked vistas is what’s special about Penang Hill. It seems removed from the busy atmosphere of George Town.

Heritage Trail

To get to the top as fast and easily as possible, follow the Heritage Trail. The trail is located close to the Penang Hill Funicular Train Lower Station. This is a direct path from the train station with several rest stops, and there are plenty of stairs, which means that the hike will be easier.

If you want to give yourself a challenge and avoid the stairs, you can follow the trail close to the Bats Cave Temple, which connects with the Heritage Trail.

Jeep Track

This is another direct route you can take, and it starts from the Penang Botanic Gardens; this is a tarmac road used by the residents. During the first kilometre of the hike, you’ll experience some difficulty, and midway through the trail, you’ll find another trail you can take. Called the Moniot Trail, this trail is more difficult than the Jeep Track and takes longer to complete, but it offers amazing views.

Moongate Trail

Another route you can take from the Botanic Gardens, Moongate Trail, is among the hardest routes; the moon-shaped entrance is what gives it its name. The stairs laid through the jungle are steep, but those who manage to keep up will be rewarded with some of the best scenic views of the area.

Bukit Gantung Trail

If you want to indulge in your hike a little longer, follow the Bukit Gantung Trail. This route cuts through the thick forest, offering you an intimate experience with nature. This is an excellent route for beginners who like a bit of a challenge. The path mostly comprises steps, but there are also dirt roads. If you want to rest your legs, you can stop at Station 39 and Station 84.

If you follow this route, it’s going to take about two and a half hours to get to the top. The starting point of the hike is Bukit Gantung Cemetery, and the total distance is 7 kilometres.

The Habitat

For the best experience, hike to The Habitat, located at the top of the hill. This is a nature reserve found deep inside the forest. A visit to this enchanting place will offer the chance to reconnect with Mother Nature. You need to be a little careful as this is home to many reptiles and insects. You’ll also see a wide range of wildflowers.

More scenery

The Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk and Langur Way Canopy Walk will bring you more beautiful scenery. For the best experience, you should visit on a clear day, so check the weather forecast before getting here. The best thing to do is to join a tour group.
