India has one of the world's oldest and largest film industries. An Indian film was shown in public for the first time in early 1913. Raja Harischandra was the title of the film. Dadasaheb Phalke, the film's director, is now remembered with a lifetime achievement award named after him. It was extremely difficult to find someone to play the role of a female at the time. That association of acting with a loss of virtue, female modesty, and respectability has only recently been challenged among the middle classes.
While a number of other film-makers pioneered the growth and development of Indian cinema in several Indian languages, the studio system emerged in the early 1930s. Its most successful early film was Devdas (1935), directed by P.C. Barua, who also played the lead role. Around the same time, the Prabhat Film Company, founded in 1929 by V. G. Damle, Shantaram, S. Fatehlal, and two other men, experienced its first success. Sant Tukaram (1936), directed by Damle and Fatehlal, was the first Indian film to achieve international acclaim.
More than anything else, V. Shantaram's social films paved the way for an entire generation of filmmakers to question not only the institutions of marriage, dowry, and widowhood, but also the grave inequities created by caste and class distinctions. Some of the social issues were eloquently expressed in the 1936 film Achhut Kanya ("Untouchable Girl"), directed by Himanshu Rai of Bombay Talkies. The story follows the struggles of a Harijan girl, Devika Rani, and a Brahmin boy, Ashok Kumar.
