'Help Me'- A script.
A lesson in being aware of one's surroundings.
A low-class apartment building. An apartment door with
several eviction notices pasted on it. Inside the apartment,
the television is on. There are beer bottles and disposable
plates scattered all over the floor. Clothes, magazines are
also scattered all around. Centre table is askew. There is a
man lying on the couch in front of the TV. He is shirtless
and looks unkempt. There are beer bottles on his lap and on
the couch, which is facing away from the main door. He is
struggling to keep his eyes open.
The main door opens, and a woman walks in. She is dressed in
corporate clothes, and is carrying a box filled with office
items, and an envelope with the words ‘TERMINATION LETTER’ on
it. Her eyes are puffy, and she looks upset and tired. She
looks at the man, sighs and walks to the kitchen. The man
does not turn around but lifts his hand to wave as he
continues staring at the TV.
The woman walks in, and stops suddenly as she notices the
mess. She slams the box she is carrying on the floor and
walks to the sink, which is filled with dirty dishes. She
looks back at the man, who is still on the couch, and then
back at the dishes. She begins cleaning up.
The man comes into the kitchen and goes straight to the
fridge. He opens it, sees that it is empty and closes it. He
goes back to the couch, as the woman watches him from the
side of her eye.
As she finishes washing the dishes, her stomach rumbles. She
goes to the fridge and opens it; it is empty. She begins
opening the cupboards in search of food but doesn't find
anything. She sits down on the floor, frustrated. She drops
her head and begins to sob quietly. Then, suddenly she sits
up. She grabs the box and empties its contents onto the
floor. She starts searching frantically, and finally finds a
box. She grabs it and hurriedly opens it. In it is N1000. She
grins widely, jumps up and runs out.
Soon after, the woman re-enters the house. She is panting heavily, and is
wet from rain. She is concealing something inside her shirt.
She goes to the kitchen, as the sound of snores fills the
house.
The woman takes out a loaf of bread from inside her shirt and
sets it on a ceramic plate. She sighs and smiles. Then, heads
to her room. The snores continue.
The woman returns, wearing a robe and a towel on her head.
She is humming happily, in anticipation of her meal. She
hears more snores, but does not pay attention. She walks to
the kitchen.
The woman enters, and stops suddenly. The loaf of bread and
plate are no longer on the table. She turns around
frantically, confused, and then to the living room. She sees
the empty plate on the man’s stomach, as he continues to
snore loudly. She screams angrily and runs to the living
room. She tries to wake him but is unsuccessful. In
frustration and anger, she takes the plate and smashes it on
his head. As he begins to wake up, she sits on top of him,
takes a broken piece of the plate and stabs him in the eye
repeatedly. Finally, she stops. She looks around briefly, and
picks up a phone. She dials a number. The person answers.
V.O
Hello, what’s your emergency?
WOMAN
I just killed my husband.
V.O
Sorry? What did you just say? Can
you...
The woman drops the phone and leans back. She picks a half-empty
bottle of beer from the floor and drinks it, with a
blank look on her face.
THE END.
