There are several main reasons of wearing clothes, which are protection, adornment, identification, status, and modesty. Although the most basic purpose of wearing clothes is to protect our bodies from environmental elements, clothing can also be used to communicate a number of things about us to other people. In this essay I’m going to do further discussion on clothing as communication, about how others forming impressions, understanding prejudice and making judgement based on our clothes and style.

Clothes are like language, can be used both for deception and expression. They can communicate a personality transparently, they can also help achieve a camouflage and carry through an illusion. Our ways of clothing make a huge difference to what people think about us.

When we meet a stranger or a person for the first time, clothing is one of the most important things used to indicate first impression. Thus, wearing something different might be a way of changing the impression others have of you. Choice in clothing can communicate responsibility, and of course social status. However, people purposely choose different types of clothing to wear in different kind of events. Different types of occasions make different kind of views. For instance, when teacher dress more formally, they tend to be rated as more competent, whereas when instructors dressed more casually, they were rated higher on sociability. Or, fot job candidates, clothing is a very important aspect for them when they go on job interviews; a candidate who wears appropriate and neat formal clothing is more likely to be selected for the position rather than a candidate wearing inappropriate clothing.

In addition, clothing styles can also influence the behaviour of one to a...

... branded clothes. Therefore, people wear certain things in order for others to judge them in a certain way. Clothing is just like other aspects in human physical appearance, it has a social significance with different restrictions and expectations being valid according to environment, circumstances and occasion.

Thus, the clothing does really matter for human behaviour. What we wear speaks a great amount of communication in just a few seconds. Dressing to impress really is worthwhile and could even be the key to success. Clothing can say a lot about you, and it can as well tell you a lot about others. Clothing can even reflect a society’s state of economy. People need to wear clothes to show our social hierarchy in our social environment. Everything we wear everyday determine which social status we fitted in, and tell people what you want them to know about you.
