Some might say, that I have led many “riveting” expeditions, I have conquered many lands, stepped on every kind of earth, and vanquished foes…Voyager? Well, I prefer Beach Vibrations. It’s a little-known term my crew and I came up with. But I digress. What could that really mean? Lailoni was absolute perfection. From her mind, her spirit, her charm, her determination. Everything about her exceptional, absolute perfection.Right down to her emerald green eyes. Could I have done something different? Why did everyone hold that obligation to me? Hold on, there’s something I need to address….did you think I was Lailoni? Or maybe a past lover even? Well, I guess all that will be revealed, once we delve deeper into the ever-growing abyss I named Lailoni.

Chapter One—"Breathe"

I believe entitlement and sense of entitlement are the same thing. Entitlement means you feel as though you have a right to something, you did not earn. Sense of entitlement is more closely related to narcissism. I’ve come across a few narcissists, some of which, I’ve grown personal towards. She came to me with many names, none of which I want to even utter at this time, meaningless.

“Lailoni!”

A voice called out.

“Where on earth could that gruesome child be?”

As they keep calling their irritability intensifies, “It’s unfortunate about what happened to her parents, it almost makes me feel sorry for her.”

The thought of pity is so overwhelming to the point of feeling a bit nauseous.

"Almost, I said, almost. After all, she is my responsibility now.”

As she rolls her eyes, thoughts begin to race through her head, writhed with anger, she continues her rant.

“As much as it pains me to say, I am her caretaker.”

Lilac pulls out a glimmering gold pocket watch to check the time, then realizes where Lailoni might be.

"I should check the garden, that’s where little Ms. Worth-" Stopping to catch herself before saying something too egregious, Lilac makes her way towards the garden. “I mean, Lailoni tends to be...”

But, that name, what were her parents thinking?

“Shhhh! Do not let her find me, please!!”

A frightened Lailoni whispers to her only confidant, Justice. “She’s horrible and she hates me oh so much!”

“But Lailoni, how could she hate you, isn’t she your-"

“Shhhhhhhhhh! I don’t care what she is to me, Justice!”

As Lailoni begins to withdraw, Justice tries to explain the reality Lailoni refuses to accept.

“I was merely trying to show you reason, Lailoni, being as though she is your-“

“I DO NOT CARE WHO SHE IS TO ME! Do you realize what she’s done to me again and again?”

“Yes, but—”

"No buts! She is the essence of evi" Lilac then discovers the two, catching Lailoni mid-accusation.

“Evil? You were going to say evil, now were you not, Lailoni?”

Lailoni’s voice begins to quiver, as she fears what might happen knowing she can't explain away from her raw emotion.

"I-I...!”

Seeing Lailoni go within herself, Lilac attempts to appear more comforting.

“Now, now, honey, you know you can tell me. After all, I am your aunt, am I not?”

"Yes. Yes...Aunt Lilac.”

Lilac reverts back to her unjustified anger towards Lailoni.

"Were you calling your favorite aunt evil?”

"N-No Aunt Lilac! I would never!”

Only seeing to exercise her dominance over Lailoni, Lilac then turns to Justice and urges her to leave.

”Justice, I’d hate to ask this of you but, I need some time alone with my precious Lailoni. It’s also about that time, I must give Lailoni her medicine. I need to be alone with my niece.”

“Of course, Ms. Lilac. I’ll see you tomorrow Lailoni.”

Justice waves goodbye to Lailoni and Lilac sizes up Lailoni to continue torturing her.

"Lailoni.”

She attempts to snap her fingers in Lailoni’s face to get her attention, a silence falls over Lailoni, and rather play along with her aunt’s cruelty, she decides to remain quiet.

"Hm, okay then, you're not going to answer to your name? How about, useless? Hopeless? Waste of time?”

Lilac continued, “You know that, right, Lailoni? You’re a pitiful waste of time, that no one cares about! You’re an orphan and your only what, 10?”

"Ohh, Lailoni's so pretty, Lailoni's is so smart, talented and wise...says who?”

Lilac notes that Lailoni cheeks are growing red from distress, eyes appearing more glossy with each suit.

"Your dead parents? Or how about your grandparents, who knows where they are?! You are alone! You will always be alone and I’m all you got! I would start being a little bit more grateful, Lailoni.”

Lailoni sheds a single tear.

“Yes, Ms—"

”Aunt Lilac! Don’t you dare refer to me as Ms. Now, try again.”

Tears running down her face as she tries to choke back from sobbing and gives in to her aunt's demands.

"Aunt Lilac.”

“Aunt Lilac what? Speak up, Lailoni!”

Lailoni timidly wipes away her tears.

"Aunt Lilac, I am very sorry for not being grateful to you. I’ll start showing my gratitude towards you more often, Aunt Lilac.”

"Good. That is better, now get out of my sight, your eyes are blinding me.”

As Lailoni got ready to leave the garden she turned back to Lilac to ask: "Wait, blinding you? How so?”

"How so? Nobody likes ugly. It’s a shame your eyes match your personality, fungus green.”

Lailoni, surprisingly is unmoved by her words, then responds with. "Oh, well, I was often told my eyes are more of an emerald green color.”

Lilac notices her sudden air of confidence that is perceived to be an outright challenge to her authority.

”You think I give a damn? If they are that color, what does that mean? Do you think that makes you better than my daughter?”

Lilac then begins to compare Lailoni to her daughter, Pepper, to shred what little confidence she may have found.

“I mean look at her, nothing more than the description of perfection. Look at you, exhaustingly plain, my Pepper is really going places, the things she has been through were unimaginable," trying to appear as though her daughter is a victim, she continues to belittle Lailoni. "You couldn’t possibly understand, I wouldn’t dare say you're all these amazing things. How would that make Pepper feel? She’s gone through that kind of abuse enough, now like I said earlier, leave!”

Lailoni leaves, crying uncontrollably.
