John T. Johnstone of North Carolina gave the name of Annandale to Mississippi in 1820. He was the great-nephew of the Earl of Annandale in Scotland. John bought 2500 acres near the Mannsdale Community. He established a huge Plantation and a two-room log house in Madison County's virgin forest, named them both Annandale.

Later, he and his wife built an elegantly furnished three-story Italian Renaissance residence, which they and their descendants lived in until the home burned in 1924.
