Is there such a thing as a stress-free camping trip when you have kids with you? We think that there is! We have put together our six top tips to help make your next camping trip something that everyone can enjoy, just don’t blame us for the weather!

To explain further, Emma Preece, Marketing Manager at Spring Lakes shares her insights into how you can enjoy camping with your children, stress free!

1. Be prepared

You don’t have to be a boy scout for a camping trip to be a success, but their motto is a good one. Try and make sue that you are as prepared as possible to make sure that nothing can throw any curveballs at you once you set off.

Ensure you have lots to keep the kids entertained, enough changes of clothes to keep an army in business and plenty of snacks to see you through the quiet times. Making sure you have some torches to hand can not only be practical but can double up as some great entertainment late at night. Pack for all eventualities and you are less likely to feel as though you have been caught out.

2. Be flexible

It’s great to have plans of what you want to do when you get there, but any seasoned camper will tell you that it doesn't always work out that way. Try not to make too many promises to the kids before the trip so that you can manage expectations and then be prepared to wing it on the odd occasion.

You might find that an attraction has closed, the tide has come in or the good old British weather has decided to mess with your plans, so be prepared to do something different. It might even turn out to be more fun than your original idea!

3. Forget the dirt

Getting the kids into the great outdoors in an essential part of childhood, and it is fantastic to see them running around playing instead of glued to a screen. Of course, that means that they are going to get a little dirty along the way. It is important to remember that a little mud never hurt anyone and not to get stressed about the muck and mayhem.

Don’t pack any clothes that are precious and then let them be free to do what comes naturally. You’re going to have a huge pile of washing when you get home no matter what happens.

4. Prepare for accidents

Whether we like it or not, accidents will happen, and they can seem a lot more stressful when we are away from home. Grazed knees, insect bites and minor burns can all be dealt with quickly and easily if you have a first aid kit to hand, so make sure it is the first thing you pack.

5. Pick the right tent

Get one that is bi enough for your whole family and doesn’t require a degree in engineering to put up. Have a practice run at home so that you know what you are doing and can get it erected even in adverse weather conditions.

6. Get the kids involved

To avoid any moaning about being bored, give the kids their own tasks to do on the campsite. It might be tidying up, fetching things from the shop, or putting up the tent. It helps to keep them involved and gives them a sense of responsibility.
