For the dreamiest of short-haul breaks, the romantic getaways you can plan in Scotland are hard to beat. And there's something to suit every style of mini-moon or honeymoon. Are you all about the city break? Beautiful Edinburgh is an obvious choice, but Glasgow is also an excellent option, with its renowned Victorian architecture and thriving cultural scene. Prefer a countryside setting? You'll be spoilt for choice with Scotland's glorious scenery, from mountains and glens to majestic lochs.

If you're looking for a foodie honeymoon, you find plenty of places to delight your tastebuds, as Scotland's new generation of chefs have put the country on the gourmet map. And when it comes to outdoor adventures, whether you prefer hiking through magnificent landscapes, rock climbing or even diving, there's an activity here to get your pulses racing. Of course, the best romantic getaways require somewhere fabulous to lay your head after a long day's adventuring. That's why we've found Scotland's most alluring places to stay, from self-catering boltholes to luxurious hotels.

1. Glenapp Castle, Ayrshire

While Glenapp Castle looks majestic inside and out, the philosophy at this five-star hotel is all about making guests feel comfortable, relaxed and at home. Each of the 17 guest rooms is unique, with carefully chosen period furnishings and divinely comfortable beds. Glenapp Castle is particularly renowned for its food, and the tasting menu, put together from fresh local produce, is a must-try.

2. Mint Croft, Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is known for its incredible beauty. It's hard for accommodation to live up to such a spectacular setting - but Mint Croft manages it. These two cottages blend harmoniously with nature, and combine traditional Hebridean architecture with luxurious features such as designer bathrooms and wood-burning stoves. It goes without saying that the views from each are incredible.

3. Prestonfield House, Edinburgh

Although not far from the city centre by car, Prestonfield House feels like it's a world away, surrounded by 20 acres of beautiful private parkland. But this isn't your typical country-house-style hotel. Inside, the aesthetic is all about opulence - think leopard-print carpet, a vibrant colour palette and lashings of gold. For a fabulously romantic dinner, make sure to book a table at the hotel's Rhubarb restaurant.

4. Knoydart Hide, Highlands

If you're looking for a self-catering option that's both luxurious and has a distinct personality, you very much need to check out Knoydart Hide. Set in picturesque woodland, this is a hideaway where privacy is the priority, but thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows you still feel connected to nature. The house features romantic delights such as a wrap-around terrace, hot tub, a freestanding bath - and even an infra-red sauna!

5. Hotel Dakota, Glasgow

This five-star city-centre boutique is the contemporary way to do luxury, from the earth-toned interior colour palette to the fact that each room includes a full Sky Sports and Sky Movies package. The beautiful bar is seductively lit, and is the perfect place for an aperitif ahead of a romantic dinner.

6. Old Town Chambers Hotel, Edinburgh

Rather than a hotel, this is in fact a collection of serviced apartments just moments from the Royal Mile. Each one is uniquely decorated and combines historic character with contemporary design. The only difficulty you'll have is choosing which one to stay in.

7. The Fife Arms, Highlands

Just nine miles from Balmoral Castle, in the Cairngorms National Park, you'll find this stunning 19th-century hunting lodge. The styling is wonderfully eclectic and inventive, with over 16,000 antiques and artworks by artists as diverse as Picasso and, well, Prince Charles! Start each evening with a whisky in The Flying Stag bar for a cosily romantic experience.

8. Croft 103, Highlands

Croft 103 is made up of two beautiful cottages, which come with eco credentials - they're powered largely by a small wind turbine and are carbon negative. Each has a seven-foot - seven! - feather-topped bed, fully equipped kitchens and incredible views. Hill Cottage slightly edges it by having two baths, each made for two people, including an outdoor bath overlooking the sea.

9. Kimpton Blythswood Square, Glasgow

The facilities at Kimpton Blythswood Square are very impressive, including a spa with two relaxation pools, well-reviewed cocktail bar The Salon and mini bars in every room with complimentary snacks. This is a dog-friendly hotel, so you can even bring your beloved pooch to enjoy the stay.

10. Auchrannie Lodges, Isle of Arran

When it first opened, Cromlix received a considerable amount of attention because it's owned by Andy Murray. However, the existence of a famous owner is just a tiny part of its charm. The hotel is set in 34 acres of woodlands and grounds, and even has its own loch. Rooms are both grand and inviting, and have televisions disguised as mirrors - one of our favourite luxe hotel touches - and Penhaligon's toiletries in the bathrooms.
