Vaathi Movie Synopsis: In the 90s, a math teacher, Bala (Dhanush), takes on the daunting task of transforming underprivileged students in the face of political obstacles to education.

Vaathi Movie Review: The story of a simple person rising to become a savior for society always resonates in cinema, especially when executed with the right elements. Dhanush's Vaathi, although loosely inspired by Hrithik Roshan's Super 30, stands on its own with a powerful and compelling central theme.

Vaathi starts in the present, with a group of three students unraveling a mysterious figure through an old VCD cassette. We come to know that the figure is Bala, who once was an assistant math teacher caught in the chaos of educational privatization. Left with no support from parents and administration, he is tasked with proving himself in an abandoned government school. Against all odds, he survives and transforms the lives of underprivileged students through education, forming the backbone of the story.

Although the template of a fall-and-rise social reformer is a universal formula for success, it depends on how it is handled. Director Venky Atluri manages to tick most of the boxes to present a commercially empowering film. Vaathi is not an extraordinary film due to its larger-than-life moments at times, but it does hold the pulse of the audience with good setup and payoffs.

The standout aspect of Vaathi is Dhanush's effortless performance and screen presence. The sequences in which he comes up with innovative ideas to educate the students are both enjoyable and thought-provoking. His powerful dialogues on social equality make a lasting impact. Samyuktha Menon, who plays Dhanush's pair and a biology teacher, looks refreshing and has done her part decently. Ken Karunas has also done an impressive job, and other students deserve a mention as well. The chemistry between Samyuktha and Dhanush works well. It's great that Venky didn't deviate much from the core plot by incorporating romance in a serious subject like this.

The writer could have avoided a few supposedly comedic sequences in the first half as they fail to evoke laughter among viewers. Additionally, the conflicts between the evil force and the good could have been introduced earlier instead of post-intermission. A couple of fight sequences could also have been avoided. The protagonist could have handled those situations in a more effective and intelligent way, creating a larger impact.

Samuthurakani, though not very menacing, plays a typical villain and has only a few sequences to show his evilness. Technically, the film is sound, and GV Prakash's music adds value to the film. The acclaimed composer's background score helps to elevate certain emotions, and the song 'Adi Aathi' sets the perfect mood during the initial sequences.

Overall, Vaathi is a film mounted on no-nonsense writing, although it could have been even better. Dhanush leads an empowering tale of struggling students that will tug at your heartstrings.
