Using Modern Technology and Online Resources for Research Methods and Practice

Online Resources for Research Methods

By Jas CaurPublished 6 years ago • 3 min read

Why is it important to have a Research Methodology section in your grant proposal? In my opinion, there are three key reasons. First, the methodologies developed by the authors of the research papers to determine if the project is eligible for funding and worthy of investment by the grant managers. Second, the methodology determines the validity of the results and provides a basis for claiming that the study is reliable and valid. Finally, the Methodology section ensures that the project adheres to the principles laid out by the funding agency.

The methodology addresses many of the challenges of statistical methodologies. For example, in order to conduct a global market research study you will need data from all over the world, rather than just the selected countries or regions where the research is to be performed. Further, you cannot simply select a specific methodology such as random sampling or households with the same profile as your sample. A good methodology will allow the researcher to build upon previous works and draw on relevant data from other fields as well. Such a procedure takes time but is an essential component of the successful conduct of any scientific research.

One key component to your Research Methodology is an ethical considerations section. The purpose of this portion of the paper is to explain to the readers why your project is different from the rest and why it is the right one for them to pursue. The ethical considerations must be precise, though, or you could find yourself in serious trouble with your research publishers. Here are a few examples:

Google Books/ Commons: For searching public domain material online, Google Books and Commons offer a free service. However, to truly understand the full scope of the available material you should also consult the relevant resources within these two free resources. The third free service is the Google indexes that provide more information on the internet and more detailed information on the authors. For example, if you were researching the social research methodologies of scholars such as anthropology, political science, sociology, journalism, etc., you would want to consult the Google indexes for all the scholarly works that these individuals have written.

Oxford Online: Although, like Google books, the content within Oxford Online is free, the scope is much more detailed and the license is limited to the particular area of study you are researching. In order to fully use the contents within the Oxford Online library you will need to acquire a subscription. Some of the content is free to use while others are on the fee-per-use basis. The most important feature of the Oxford online library is the availability of the full bibliography of scholars and the subject matter. The reason behind this is that many people conduct academic research online and they cannot always make their research accessible to all.

Journal of the American Medical Associations: It is not uncommon to find articles in medical journals that are technically well written by trained professionals but lack clarity when discussing complicated issues such as statistical methodology, health insurance, economic theory, etc. The situation is even worse when the articles are written by the author as the person is usually not a medical doctor. Hence, the articles should be able to communicate the ideas clearly and unambiguously. When the article uses mixed methods for statistical analysis, i.e. when it utilizes probability, chi-square, or t-tests, it should be explained clearly that the results cannot be used directly in a decision-making context.

Shu Libraries and Reference: This is another good place to find research methods and examples. For example, if you want to search for the citation of Charles Darwin in Google books you will get a list of books containing his works with page numbers. Similarly, when searching for the citation of Alfred Wallace you get a similar list of books containing his works. If you want to read a chapter of an eminent economists' book, I recommend looking up the economics bibliography. Of course, it would not be wrong to say that the bibliographic records provide useful material for understanding economic concepts.

Finally, make sure the article has a strong title and abstract. Such titles and abstracts do make a difference. Thus, in your research methods and practice, using the libraries, internet and reference resources is crucial.
