This article examines how green infrastructure has evolved in Arizona’s cities, its impact on sustainability, and its potential for creating more resilient urban environments.

Green Infrastructure: What It Means for Arizona

Green infrastructure refers to a network of natural systems designed to manage environmental challenges while offering multiple ecological, economic, and social benefits. Unlike traditional “grey” infrastructure, such as concrete stormwater drains and concrete channels, green infrastructure uses natural processes to solve problems like stormwater management, urban heat islands, and habitat loss. Green infrastructure elements include rain gardens, green roofs, urban forests, permeable pavements, and wetlands, which help absorb and manage water, reduce pollution, and create more livable cities.

In Arizona, adopting green infrastructure represents a shift in how cities view the relationship between nature and urban spaces. This raises energy costs by increasing the demand for air conditioning, exacerbates air pollution, and poses serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Green infrastructure is an effective solution to combat the urban heat island effect. Trees, shrubs, and green spaces help cool the surrounding environment through evapotranspiration—the process by which plants release water vapor into the air. In Phoenix, the city has made significant strides in expanding its urban tree canopy through initiatives like the Phoenix Tree and Shade Master Plan. The plan aims to increase the city’s tree coverage by 25% by 2030, reducing temperatures, improving air quality, and enhancing the city's overall livability.

Additionally, green roofs are becoming common in Arizona’s urban spaces. These roofs are covered with vegetation, which helps cool buildings by providing shade and reducing the heat absorbed by rooftops. Tucson has also adopted green roof strategies in its downtown area, encouraging private businesses and public buildings to install green roofs to reduce heat and improve air quality. These initiatives help mitigate heat and reduce energy costs, as buildings require less air conditioning when their rooftops are insulated by vegetation.
