the environment or community concerned with the pursuit of research, education, and scholarship.

For the longest time, I have searched for the right kinds of movies factoring around the aesthetic of hard working young students and careers. After being introduced to a film connecting to the idea of academia, I have decided to compile a shirt list of films that depict the settings and tone of academia.

'Dead Poets Society'

"Dead Poets Society" (1989 film)

Dead Poets Society is a PG drama/teen film made in 1989. With a rating of 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Dead Poets Society focuses around a new English teacher, John Keating (well known actor, Robin Williams) who is brought into an all-boys school. Widely known for its high standards and traditions, he uses his unique methods to reach out to his students. In attempts to connect to his students, due to them being pressured constantly from the high expectations expected of them from the school and their parents. John's teaching methods inspire his students to break out of their cages and pursue their dreams. The film is two hours and twenty minutes long, so make sure to settle in!

You can watch Dead Poets Society on YouTube for rent for $2.99, or you can watch on Netflix.

'Freedom Writers'

"Freedom Writers" (2007 film)

If you liked that last one, I can guarantee that you will like this next film. Freedom Writers is a PG-13 drama/teen film. Receiving a 70 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Freedom Writers is about a dedicated teacher (Hilary Swank) who teaches a class of unmotivated teenagers on the verge of failing. Instead of giving up, she tries her best and later inspires her students to pursue their dreams and consider plans for what their future will hold. Working closely with her students, she assigns them each reading material that contains similarities to their lives and struggles they face every day. Along with that, she also highly encourages them to keep personal journals.

The film is based on a book by Erin Gruwill.

You can watch this film now on YouTube for rent for only $2.99.

'Kill Your Darlings' (2013)

"Kill Your Darlings" (2013 film)

This next film has a much more sophisticated twist on it than the previous two. Centering around a true story of obsession, murder, and the thrill of attraction, Kill Your Darlings is rated R for sexual content, language, drug use, and brief violence. Directed by John Krokidas, this thriller/drama film received a 75 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film takes place in 1943 and surrounds around a young Allen Ginsberg (played by known actor Daniel Radcliffe) and other great poets, Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William Burroughs (Ben Foster) are brought together when half the team gets arrested for murder when former rival is found dead. In the Midwest of the action, Allen Ginsberg finds himself having a soft spot for his charismatic classmate, Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) during his time as a freshman at Columbia University. All four mature poets dream of changing the world, but do not know exactly how to go about it. In retrospect, the film is made for a much older and mature crowd, but is still a high quality underrated film with an interesting and thought out background.

You can watch the film on YouTube for rent for only $2.99.

'Howl' (2010)

"Howl" (2010 film)

Another film based on the fascinating story of American poet, Allen Ginsberg would be the 2010 film, Howl. Receiving a rating of 62 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, Howl is a rated R drama/indie film about the life and times of American Poet Allen Ginsberg. In the film, Allen's most famous poem is published in animation throughout the scenes. The film is about Poet Allen Ginsberg (played by James Franco) living in San Francisco in the 1950s along with fellow writers and friends Jack Kerouac (portrayed by Todd Rotondi) and Neal Cassady (Jon Prescott) when he writes the infamous “Howl” poem. Later on in the film, a bookstore owner by the name of Lawrence Ferlinghetti (portrayed by Andrew Rogers) who Allen meets during his time there, ends up publishing Allen's poem, but is soon put on trial for obscene language and behavior.

You can watch the film on YouTube for rent for only $3.99.
