Birds chirped from dawn till dusk, and its simple people led a content life.There lived a humble farmer named Abdul Karim, his wife Fatima, and their only son, Hasan. Though poor, Karim was deeply religious, honest, and hardworking. He owned a small piece of land and worked on others’ fields to make ends meet. He never sought wealth through dishonest means.He often told his son,“Hasan, this world is only a test. People chase wealth and status, but if Allah is not pleased with us, none of it matters.”Hasan, too, was growing up to be a kind and devout young boy. He studied at the village madrasa and helped his father with farming during his free time.2. An Unexpected DiscoveryOne year, after a heavy monsoon, a portion of Karim’s field collapsed due to erosion. His crops were mostly destroyed. As he was clearing the field one morning, he noticed a patch of loose soil. Curious, he began digging—and discovered an old iron chest buried underground.Opening it, he was stunned to find it filled with gold coins, silver jewelry, and some old papers. For a moment, he stood silently. In such hard times, anyone else might have kept it without a second thought. But Karim lowered his head and said,“Ya Allah, this is a test from You. If this was my provision, You would have given it to me rightfully. I do not want to displease You.”He wrapped the chest in cloth and brought it home. His wife was surprised, but after hearing his decision, she supported him completely.“Truth is truth,” she said. “You’re doing the right thing.”3. Walking the Path of TruthThe next morning, Karim went straight to the village mosque and handed over the chest to the Imam. He explained everything and requested that it be returned to its rightful owner.The Imam was deeply moved.“These days, honesty like yours is rare. May Allah bless you for this noble act.”The village announced the finding through loudspeakers—calling for the rightful owner to come forward with proof.Many came, but none could verify their claim. After four days, an elderly man arrived. With tired eyes and a weathered file in hand, he said,“This land once belonged to my grandfather. During the partition, we were forced to flee. My grandfather buried our family treasure here before we left.”The man presented old documents, photos, and a rusted key. It matched the lock on the chest. The imam, after verifying everything, confirmed his claim.4. Reward? Or Righteous Deed?With tears in his eyes, the old man said to Karim,“You could’ve kept this, and no one would’ve known. But you feared Allah. I’m giving you half of this treasure as a gift.”Karim folded his hands and replied,“I returned the trust for Allah’s pleasure, not for reward. I seek no part of it.”The old man insisted,“If you don’t accept it, I’ll be burdened with guilt. Please use it for good.”Eventually, Karim accepted it—with a pure heart.5. A New BeginningKarim didn’t spend the wealth on luxury. Instead, he used it to build a small madrasa in the village so that poor children could get both religious and basic education. He also sent Hasan to study at a renowned madrasa in Dhaka.People in the village would say,“Karim bhai may be wealthy now, but his heart is still the same—kind and humble.”Years passed. Hasan grew into a respected Islamic scholar and returned to lead the madrasa his father built. He would often say,“My father taught me that character is more valuable than wealth. Even one coin earned through dishonesty brings destruction.”6. A Final MessageAs old age caught up with Karim, he called Hasan to his side one evening.“Hasan,” he said, “life will bring many temptations. Never forget Allah. Titles, money, and fame—they all fade. If Allah is pleased, you’ve succeeded.”A few weeks later, Karim passed away. His janazah was attended by people from many villages. Tears rolled down their faces as they said,“We may never see another man like him again.”Standing beside his father’s grave, Hasan whispered,“O Allah, grant my father the highest place in Jannah. He wasn’t just my father—he was the light of our village.”Moral Lessons:Betraying a trust (amanah) is a grave sin.Allah always honors the sincere and the truthful.True wealth lies in good character and righteous deeds.Raising a child with taqwa (piety) is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give.
